Hello hello! It is Canadian Thanksgiving weekend and we have a small group of our immediate family coming over for dinner. I haven’t found a new job yet. However, I’ve just been working out, doing things around the house and preparing for thanksgiving. I recently stumbled across a pin on Pinterest stating what “hygge” is. Moreover, as I’ve heard that word used here and there, I was intrigued to find out more about the hygge way of life.

What does “hygge” mean?

The Google definition of hygge states “a quality of coziness and comfortable conviviality that engenders a feeling of contentment or well-being.” Moreover, hygge is a Danish word and is a defining characteristic of the culture. Since then, I started reading other blogs, watching different Youtube videos and seeing different graphics on what the hygge lifestyle really is. After that, I realized that this is the way I have been living for the past 2 years and I’m in love with the concept!

As I write and film more, you’ll find out more personal things about me. One of the things about me is that I romanticize life. Similarly, I express gratitude every day and I take comfort in exposing myself to many different adventurous and cozy experiences.

How I started embracing hygge?

I only started to embrace this lifestyle a few years back and didn’t know that there was a term for it. I sometimes have anxiety and wanted to find a way to manage it. This is when I started minimizing my things, enjoying my surroundings, and finding that life balance. As a result, this lifestyle has made me feel a lot better. It is easy for me to often get lost and overwhelmed when there are too many things around me. In other words, I like having a clean and open and environment (not to say that every drawer and closet is counted as my “junk” storage haha).

As I’ve been home, I’ve been listening to some podcasts, watching youtube videos and documentaries on the hustle and workaholic culture that society has. Whenever I go scroll down any of my feeds or timelines, it is filled with this energy! I am definitely the same way and believe in hard work pays off. As a result, I post about drive, working hard, pushing yourself to reach your goals, motivation quotes etc. BUT… we all need to establish proper boundaries.

Here are some tips to embrace the Hygge way of life:

lighting some candles instead of turning on lights (to create a cozy atmosphere)

have a warm cup of tea, coffee, hot chocolate, cider or any hot drink you enjoy and a sweet treat

wear cozy socks, blankets, sweaters to keep you warm

take time out of your day to not talk about anything negative or heavy and only happy light topics

truly enjoy hobbies that are not related to your work or business

embrace your environment, know that you are safe, and truly listen to others around you at that moment

put your screens away, play some music and let your body move

lastly, always express gratitude, meditate or savour the moment and not be afraid to sit in silence
