Salted caramel… Whoever invented sweet and salty into one delicious flavour is/was a genius!
I only recently started loving salted caramel when I got a salted caramel cold brew from Starbucks but love it so much! It’s currently my go-to drink at the moment!
The salt and caramel taste together complement the buttery shortbread so well! This classic shortbread recipe is actually one I found online and adore and use often from Jo Cooks!
Do you like salted caramel desserts? What’s your favourite?! I’d love to know in the comments below.
PIN Salted Caramel Bars FOR LATER:
Salted caramel was definitely a surprise for me in terms of taste because I didn’t realize how often it switches from salty to sweet. I feel like with every bite you get both but it switches on and off!
A few salted caramel treats that I have been loving lately are brownies, chocolates, drinks and cookies. As I’m new to the salted caramel world, I look forward to recipe testing with it more often!
I also adore chocolate chip cookies with sea salt sprinkled on top so salty and sweet desserts are a big combo in my life right now.
Salted caramel for me is a total Fall flavour and if you’ve read this blog a few times, you know that Fall is a big thing for me! Along with salted caramel, I really enjoy apple, pumpkin, cinnamon, and maple flavours in my Fall recipes!
Are you excited for Fall? What’s your favourite Fall flavour?
HERE IS HOW TO MAKE SALTED CARAMEL BARS:
WHERE CAN I FIND THESE INGREDIENTS?
All the ingredients for these Salted Caramel Bars can be found anywhere. The base of this bar is shortbread which is basically icing sugar, butter, and flour which are staples in most baking households, and the sea salt caramel chips I got from my baking aisle so this might be a little harder to find! You can purchase these Sea Salt Caramel Chipits on Amazon as well!
WHAT ARE THE INGREDIENTS?
The ingredients to make these Salted Caramel Bars are:
- 1 Bag of Salted Caramel Chipits
- Salted Butter
- Icing Sugar
- Flour
- Caramel sauce (garnish, optional)
- Sea Salt (garnish, optional)
WHAT EQUIPMENT DO I NEED?
The equipment needed to make these super easy salted caramel bars are an electric mixer and a 9×9″ square baking dish! Additionally, you’ll need some bowls – 1 to melt the chips in and 2 to mix the shortbread ingredients together. It’s easier to clean up if you line the baking dish with parchment paper but you can grease the pan really well too with olive oil or butter.
WHAT ARE THE STEPS TO PREPARE?
For these salted caramel bars, you’ll need to:
- Measure – all your ingredients to make the shortbread base
- Mix – with an electric mixer (highly recommended) to ensure all the ingredients are well combined
- Bake – once your shortbread is in the pan, you’ll need to bake it for 12 minutes and cool
- Melt – either using a double boiler or microwave, melt the whole bag of salted caramel chipits
- Pour – the melted chipits over the shortbread bar base
- Chill – in the fridge for at least 2 hours to harden
CAN I SUB ANYTHING OUT?
Since this salted caramel bars recipe is super easy peasy and really doesn’t involve a lot, I wouldn’t! BUT with that being said, you may not be able to purchase the salted caramel chipits so you can definitely swap this out for just regular salted caramel sauce. Beware! Since the chipits are sort of like a melted chocolate consistency, they did harden after cooling and salted caramel sauce will not be the same. It will be more gooey!
So, if you use regular salted caramel, I would just put the salted caramel sauce before eating or freeze the bars with the salted caramel sauce on top so they harden!
WHAT DOES IT TASTE LIKE?
I really really enjoy these salted caramel bars! They are quite sweet but since the salted caramel is such a thin layer and the shortbread bar base is thick, it’s not too overpowering. It is a really great combo and perfect for gifting or sharing with other people as well!
The shortbread is very basic and has a neutral taste as it’s really only flour, butter and icing sugar so the pairing is fantastic!
HOW LONG DOES IT KEEP FOR?
These salted caramel bars keep for a long time which is so awesome! You can store them in the back of a cold fridge for up to 2 weeks or in the freezer for up to a month and a half. Make sure that they are in an airtight container and before you eat them, let them thaw out on the counter for 1 hour or 2.
I froze mine then took them out and they were rock hard but I let them thaw out and they became really soft and chewy again!
WHAT GOES WITH THESE SALTED CARAMEL BARS?
These salted caramel bars are perfect with/for a:
- Black Coffee/Tea – I say black as these are super sweet as it is! but of course, up to you to add milk/cream/sugar
- Cheat Breakfast – Can’t say it’s the healthiest breakfast but they sure are good on the go!
- Dessert after Dinner – Of course, works well as dessert after dinner
- Dessert Board – Beautiful square pieces to add to your dessert “charcuterie” board
- Thanksgiving – Lovely addition of Fall flavours to your Thanksgiving spread
- Gift – Wrap them up and tie them with gorgeous ribbons or bows to give as gifts.
WHAT ARE OTHER VARIATIONS OF SALTED CARAMEL BARS ?
You can make these salted caramel bars in so many different variations! Here are my favourite recipes from other blogs:

MORE BAR RECIPES?
If Salted Caramel Bars aren’t for you, there are so many other bars that you can make! Here are some of my favourite ways to make quick and easy bar recipes:
- Cadbury Mini Egg Blondies– My favourite Easter recipe! Blondies are great in general.
- No-Bake Peanut Butter Oat Bars – The perfect breakfast bar especially when you’ve got a busy week!
- Blueberry Lemon Blondies – A great Summer recipe and treat to have!
- Apple Crisp Shortbread Bars – Ultimate Fall Bar recipe!
INSPIRATIONS FOR THIS TREAT?
So I say this often but everything good in my life happens after August 31! Fall and holiday season is on my brain 24/7 so I’m always loving Fall recipes! Salted caramel is one of those recipes that work so well during the Fall season so I had to try making these bars!
I’ve never really loved caramel sauce or flavouring and just starting to now so I thought these super easy-baked salted caramel bars would be a hit and I was right!
HOW CAN I MEAL PREP THIS RECIPE?
You can easily meal prep this salted caramel bars recipe anytime! You can store it in a cold fridge for up to 2 weeks or in the freezer for a month and a half. When you want to eat it, just let it thaw out! You can pack this for breakfast or lunch as a special treat or have one as dessert after dinner.
I recommend storing it in a small container if you do pack it as it could get really melty and messy in a ziplock bag depending on where you put it in your lunch or work bag!
ANY OTHER NOTES?
No other notes for this recipe. It is super easy and I recommend it to anyone! They are perfect for gift giving or bringing something for a Thanksgiving dinner you are attending.
Ensure that these salted caramel bars are fully thawed out so they are still soft and chewy! If you don’t let it thaw, they’ll end up being pretty hard!
Salted Caramel Bars
Ingredients
- 1 1/2 Cups Salted Softened Butter
- 1 Cup Icing Sugar
- 3 Cups All-Purpose Flour
- 1 Bag Hershey's Sea Salt Caramel Chipits
- Caramel Sauce optional, drizzle on top
- Sea Salt optional, sprinkle on top
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 325F and line a 9×9" baking pan with parchment paper or grease generously with butter or oil.
- In a large mixing bowl, add in your butter and mix with an electric mixer until smooth for about 1-2 minutes.
- Add in icing sugar 1/2 cup as a time and mix again. Scrape down the sides so everything is well incorporated.
- Add in flour a cup at a time and mix at low speed. At this point, you'll have super crumbly dough.
- Dump all the dough into the baking sheet and press down firmly including all the corners of the pan. Using a fork, poke around the cookie dough for even cooking.
- Bake in the oven for about 12-15 minutes or until the edges are slightly golden. Remove from oven and let cool.
- Pour a whole bag of sea salt caramel chipits into a bowl and microwave for 30 seconds at a time until all the chipits are melted.
- Pour the melted chipits mixture on top of the shortbread base. Let cool on the counter for an additional 20 minutes and put in the fridge for minimally an hour up to 2 for the chipits to harden.
- Cut, serve and enjoy!
I do all my recipes well in advance as I test them and write notes too. So as I’m writing this post, I can 100% confirm that I am drooling just looking at the photos!
