Read more for all the details on Rachel Green’s Thanksgiving Trifle.
Thanksgiving is my favourite holiday. I’ve said that many many times before but I love Fall and it’s the only holiday in Fall so I mean it’s a given!
I love that Thanksgiving is literally a holiday that’s just full of good. There are no presents like Christmas or countdown to a fresh new year like NYE, it’s just a dinner full of decadent foods and enjoying people’s company.
We’re back with another addition to the series of Food from TV shows of movies and today, in honour of American Thanksgiving, we are re-creating Rachel Green’s Thanksgiving Trifle! If you’re a fan of the tv show, Friends, you’re familiar with this episode of Rachel Green, one of the main characters in the show make a trifle that is half an English Trifle and half a Shephard’s Pie.
The cookbook recipe she was following had a page ripped out so she ended up following half of a dessert recipe and half of a dinner recipe. I’ve watched Friends start to finish probably about 10 times and it’s now a comfort show that I enjoy probably once a year!
Are you a big fan of the show Friends? If not, you’ve got to watch it!!
PIN Rachel Green’s Thanksgiving Trifle FOR LATER:
So, far into this series, I have only really hated one dish with a passion and that’s the Scooby-Doo’s Eggplant Burger with Chocolate Sauce. I don’t think I’ve ever been as traumatized by a recipe aside from that one!
This trifle, although definitely weird, I actually do not mind as much. There’s thankfully only one layer of ground beef with peas and onions so it wasn’t THAT bad. I would still never eat this again or serve to my worst enemy!
This Rachel Green’s Thanksgiving Trifle recipe is accompanied by a YouTube Tutorial. If you haven’t subscribed to my channel on YouTube, don’t forget to!
HERE IS HOW TO MAKE RACHEL GREEN’S THANKSGIVING TRIFLE:
WHERE CAN I FIND THESE INGREDIENTS?
The ingredients to make this Thanksgiving trifle can be found at any grocery store! For this recipe, you’ll need some ladyfingers which are just very light sponge cookies. Jam of your choice, I choose raspberry. Some fresh raspberries and custard made from scratch. I follow this recipe for pastry cream and made it the night before. Ground beef sauteed with peas and onions, banana slices and whipped cream.
Everything I’d say in this recipe is pretty standard and can be found at more stores depending on where you are in the world!
WHAT ARE THE INGREDIENTS?
The ingredients to make Rachel Green’s Thanksgiving Trifle are:
- Lady Fingers
- Homemade Custard – I used this delicious recipe!
- Red Jam
- Fresh Raspberries
- Ground Beef
- Peas
- Onions
- Banana Slices
- Whipped Cream
- Milk
WHAT IS THE TIME BREAKDOWN TO MAKE THIS RECIPE?
The time breakdown to make Rachel Green’s Thanksgiving Trifle in total is actually a bit longer than my usual recipes because you have to prepare the custard the night before and also cook the ground beef, peas and onions. You also really want to let the layers set in the fridge! The full breakdown for Rachel Green’s Thanksgiving Trifle is:
The Night Before:
To Prepare – + cook and chill the custard
Time: 30 Minutes
The Day Of:
To Prepare – and measure all the ingredients
Time: 10 Minutes
To Cook – the ground beef sauteed with peas and onions and let fully cool down
Time: 20 Minutes
To Assemble – each layer in the trifle bowl
Time: 15 Minutes
To Set – all the layers and the bowl in the fridge
Time: 4-6 Hours
Total time: 5-7 hours
WHAT ARE THE STEPS TO PREPARE?
This recipe for Rachel Green’s Thanksgiving Trifle was really fun to try and recreate but definitely a lot more steps than usual! The steps to make this super easy trifle are:
The Night Before:
- Prepare – cook and chill the custard on the stove and fridge
The Day Of:
- Prepare – and measure all the ingredients
- Cook – and sautee together the ground beef, peas and onions
- Assemble– each layer into the trifle bowl nicely and evenly
- Chill/Set – in the fridge for 4-6 hours before serving
CAN I SUB/ADD ANYTHING OUT?
Because this is part of a series on my blog where I re-create food from a TV show or movie, I’m going to say I DO NOT recommend adding or substituting any ingredients for Rachel Green’s Thanksgiving Trifle. I studied this scene multiple times and tried to put myself in Rachel’s cooking ability shoes to make this!
I will however say that minus the ground beef with sauteed peas and onions, this dessert is actually so good! I like trifles in general and how pretty and aesthetically pleasing they are so if you like a hybrid cake/pudding, trifles are the dessert for you!
Instead of the ground beef with sauteed peas and onions, you can put a layer of jam and berries! SO GOOD!
WHAT DOES IT TASTE LIKE?
OKAY, so to me. I took a bite and I immediately tasted it all. The creamy custard, jam, raspberries, whipped cream, bananas, ladyfingers and unfortunately the ground beef with peas and onions. I loved the dessert taste of it but the ground beef, to me, tasted like I was eating the filling of a spring roll or even a stir fry dish!
I wouldn’t say that the weird taste goes away BUT you kind of get used to it LOL!
HOW LONG DOES IT KEEP FOR?
If you were actually making this dish for someone, I would say it keeps for a maximum of 24 hours BUT without the whipped cream and bananas. You’ll just need to add that part right before you serve it. If you add it, your bananas will turn black and the whipped cream will deflate!
WHAT GOES WITH RACHEL GREEN’S THANKSGIVING TRIFLE?
Rachel Green’s Thanksgiving Trifle is one of a kind. I would say that out of everything that you can eat this with, I would highly highly recommend drowning it with a drink or some liquids LOL! Pushing it down to your stomach so you don’t have to taste it anymore might be the best thing for you and this accidentally savoury and sweet trifle.
MORE TRIFLE RECIPES?
I adore trifles and think they are super pretty and like one of the best desserts to serve to guests! They really are like a hybrid of cake and pudding. I love it! Some of my favourite trifle recipes on Pinterest are:
- Easy Chocolate Trifle – One of my favourite trifle recipes!! An easy trifle filled with chocolatey goodness!
- Tiramisu Trifle – Okay, tiramisu trifles are a must 100%! The layers in a traditional tiramisu just screams trifle as well
- Mixed Berry Trifle – Perfect for summer when berries are in season and you can pick up fresh ones at your local farmers market
- Sticky Toffee Pudding Trifle – Mmmm, sticky toffe pudding is delish! Everytime I see this on the menu in a restaurant, I could never pass it up!
INSPIRATIONS FOR THIS DISH?
I actually was not expecting to make this recipe this month because, in my head, Thanksgiving is in October for Canadians! I’ve been watching a lot of comfort shows lately as I tend to lean toward more comfort things towards the Fall/Winter and I realized that way back when I really wanted to try this out!
I legit adore Friends and it’s my go-to feel-good show forever! I always wanted to try this as I thought it was super weird but it MIGHT work too haha!
ANY OTHER NOTES?
I guess my only note for this one is that it’s fun to try but its definitely not one that you’ll truly enjoy eating haha. This dish is basically just for fan and would be perfect for Friends fans!
