Read more for all the details on Christmas Popcorn.
It’s that time of the year where we’re binge-watching our favourite Christmas movies and what’s better than having the best sweet and salty Christmas snack by our side?!
I admit I have a weird love/hate relationship with popcorn. I go through weeks where I can’t stop making bags of popcorn then can go through months without eating a single piece of popcorn! No popcorn. I said NO POPCORN is better than movie theatre ones with lots of butter! Such a guilty pleasure.
For this popcorn recipe, I make every Christmas because I’m one to watch a lot of holiday movies -old and new! I love everything about Christmas and do the mostest every year. Although my home decor says otherwise, I love all the red and green-themed snacks and food at the grocery stores!
What’s your favourite Christmas snack? Are you looking forward to making it this year?!
PIN Christmas Popcorn FOR LATER:
I do need to give out a fair warning! This snack is extremely messy but I mean all the best foods are messy right!
This Sweet and Salty Christmas Popcorn recipe is accompanied by a YouTube Tutorial. If you haven’t subscribed to my channel on YouTube, don’t forget to!
HERE IS HOW TO MAKE CHRISTMAS POPCORN:
WHERE CAN I FIND THESE INGREDIENTS?
To make these delicious sweet and salty Christmas Popcorn, you’ll only need a few ingredients. You’ll need some popcorn bags, white chocolate, m&m’s, salt and some Christmas sanding sugar or sprinkles but this is completely optional!
WHAT ARE THE INGREDIENTS?
The ingredients to make Christmas Popcorn are:
- Popcorn
- White Cholate
- M&M’s
- Salt
- Optional: Christmas Sanding Sugar or Sprinkles
WHAT TYPE OF POPCORN SHOULD I USE?
You can really use any type of popcorn for this recipe! I just use Orville Redenbacher’s Smart Pop! Popcorn Bags on an ongoing basis or if I want to just have popcorn without needing to pop it in the microwave, I’m also a huge fan of Angie’s BOOMCHICKAPOP Sweet & Salty Kettle Corn. You can use whatever you’d like whether you make it in the microwave, on the stove, in a popcorn machine or just have it ready to eat!
WHAT IS THE TIME BREAKDOWN TO MAKE THIS RECIPE?
The time breakdown to make this Christmas Popcorn snack is literally about 5-10mins and is courtesy of Chef Mike aka the microwave! The full breakdown for this Christmas Popcorn is:
To Prepare and Heat– this includes using the microwave to cook the popcorn and melt the chocolate.
Time: 3-5 Minutes
To Toss Together– this includes adding the popcorn, white chocolate, m&m’s, salt and sprinkles and tossing them together in a big bowl
Time: 3-5 Minutes
Total time from start to finish: About 8-10 Minutes
WHAT EQUIPMENT DO I NEED?
Honestly, you really do not need any equipment to make Christmas Popcorn. All you’ll need is a decent-sized bowl to toss all the popcorn and I highly recommend a big bowl because you don’t want to be like me and make a huge mess while tossing and dropping popcorn everywhere!
You’ll want a small bowl to melt the chocolate and a spoon to stir and make sure that the chocolate has fully melted by stirring in between the microwave intervals but other than that, maybe a spatula and that’s it! You’ll definitely not need to purchase anything additional and I encourage you to just use what you have at home 🙂
WHAT ARE THE STEPS TO PREPARE?
This Christmas Popcorn is a great snack to have during a Christmas marathon movie night! I love watching my favourite Christmas movies and having Christmas-themed snacks on the side! The steps to make these easy Reindeer Cookies are:
- Prepare and Heat – your popcorn and white chocolate in the microwave until the kernels are fully popped and the chocoalte is fully melted
- Assemble and Toss – together all the ingredients include the popcorn, melted white chocolate, m&m’s and Christmas sanding sugar and/or sprinkles
- Serve – to yourself or yoru family/friends during your Christmas movie marathon!
CAN I SUB/ADD ANYTHING OUT?
Yes, you can substitute and/add anything in this recipe! I kept it super super simple but if you want to substitute the chocolate, you can use milk, semi-sweet, or dark chocolate and if you want to be really crazy, peanut butter or almond butter would be fantastic!
Of course, popcorn is the star in this recipe but I’d seen something similar with potato chips so you can definitely try that instead of popcorn. As far as the m&m’s you can always use your favourite chocolate pieces but the red and green m&m’s definitely set the spirit of Christmas!
The sprinkles are optional as well but I like making my snacks as Christmas as possible. You can of course, add in some crushed nuts or other toppings that you love!
WHAT DOES IT TASTE LIKE?
This Christmas Popcorn recipe is absolutely fab! In literally every single bite, you get a taste of both sweet and salty which I am obsessed with. I love that the melted chocolate ends up hardening a little bit so you can clusters of chocolate and popcorn which are the best part!
Christmas Popcorn tastes and feels exactly what the ingredient are. You get the crunch for the popcorn, m&m’s, sprinkles, the sweetest from the chocolate and some pieces with salt.
HOW LONG DOES IT KEEP FOR?
This Christmas Popcorn does not keep at all. After probably a half hour – an hour, the popcorn will be stale and won’t be good anymore so this popcorn would almost be considered a movie trailer snack haha! Do not make this if you don’t intend to eat it immediately!
WHAT GOES WITH THIS CHRISTMAS POPCORN?
This sweet and salty Christmas Popcorn is an amazing Christmas movie marathon snack! Make this just as you’re about to start rolling the credits for a Christmas movie night! This sweet and salty Christmas Popcorn recipe is great:
- With a Warm Drink – like a peppermint hot chocolate, cup of tea or coffee
- On a Christmas Board – to compliment all the yummy Christmas treats!
- For a Christmas Movie Night – the perfect treat for a Christmas movie marathon!
WHAT ARE OTHER VARIATIONS OF CHRISTMAS POPCORN?
Some other variations of Christmas Popcorn are:
- Christmas Crunch – This one has mini pretzels, yum!
- White Chocolate Popcorn – Another one with popcorn and coconut oil!
- Holiday Popcorn Snack Recipe – This one subs white chocolate for marshallows instead!
- White Chocolate Peppermint Popcorn – If you’re a fan of peppermint chocolate things, this is for you!

I’ve got a full recipe of 20 No-Bake Easy Christmas Treats but here are some of my fav Christmas snack recipes on Pinterest:

INSPIRATIONS FOR THIS DISH?
I’d say that out of all the months in the year, the holidays or after summer is the time that I watch the most movies. I am not a very big fan of movies because I don’t have the attention span to focus sometimes so I don’t tend to watch the latest and greatest movies! There’s something about holiday movies that will always capture my attention and of course with Christmas movies, we need Christmas snacks!
I love everything Christmas-themed and am a sucker for Christmas-themed snacks and food. I love all the food products marketed for Christmas!
COST OF THIS CHRISTMAS POPCORN?
This Christmas Popcorn is probably the quickest Christmas snack that I make during the holidays! It only requires a few ingredients and everything can be found at your local grocery store.
Based on my groceries in CAD, if you were buying EVERYTHING from scratch:
Quick Sweet and Salty Christmas Popcorn
- Orville Redenbacher Smart Pop! (420g/6 Bags) -$5.45
- Mini M&M’s (120g) – $3.25
- Chipits White Chocolate Chips (225g) – $4.35
- Christmas Sprinkles and Sugars (46g) – $5.45
Total: $18.50 before taxes (not all the ingredients were used and leftovers can be used for other recipes)
As all of these ingredients are new, if you just priced out the actual ingredients used to make this Christmas Popcorn, it would come up to about $3.70 before taxes.
ANY OTHER NOTES?
One important note: Please DO NOT make this recipe ahead of time! The popcorn gets stale so quick and will only last about 30 minutes to an hour at most! This snack is meant to be eaten immediately after making 🙂
