Read more for all the details on Pesto Asparagus Pasta.
I always know when spring is coming based on when asparagus is in season! I don’t know about you but asparagus is pricey in my local grocery stores! One bundle can literally cost about $6-10 and at least for me, I can eat a bundle within minutes.
Every year between February to March, I often eat a lot more asparagus because its cheaper and there’s always a lot of bunches at the store. I find that sometimes when they’re not in season, the bunches of asparagus look sad and not crunchy.
One of my fav things to make is this really easy pesto asparagus pasta and today I’m going to share this recipe with you all!

HERE IS HOW TO MAKE PESTO ASPARAGUS PASTA:
WHERE CAN I FIND THESE INGREDIENTS?
The ingredients for this pasta are super easy to obtain. Especially during asparagus season, for the most part, they are in every big grocery chain! You’ll need asparagus and garlic from the produce section. Parmesan cheese and salted butter from the dairy section. Pasta and pesto from the pantry aisles of your grocery store. Pasta water reserved from boiling the pasta!
WHAT ARE THE INGREDIENTS?
The ingredients used for this pesto asparagus pasta:
- 1 Bunch of Asparagus
- Salted Butter
- Pesto (your favourite jar of pesto sauce)
- Parmesan (pre-shaved or shredded is fine)
- Garlic Cloves
- 2-3 servings of cooked pasta
- 1 cup of pasta water
WHAT EQUIPMENT DO I NEED?
You don’t need too much to make this pesto asparagus pasta! I did this all in one pot and a few bowls and a slotted serving spoon for pasta! These are some that I recommend from Amazon!
CAN I SUB/ADD ANYTHING OUT?
Of course, you can, my friends! I always love suggesting that my recipes are a guide for people. You can use any pasta of choice! I personally picked capellini because I thought it would be interesting to have the thick stalks of asparagus and thin capellini pasta together. Use anything you have on hand or any pasta of your choosing.
As for the rest of the ingredients, do what you want! If pesto isn’t your thing, you can omit it and just have a basic buttery sauce. You can also add concentrated chicken stock for more flavour if you’d like!
You can add in any other vegetables that you love! Greens that you can easily add in for aesthetic purposes are leeks, peas, green onions, green bell peppers etc.
WHAT DOES PESTO ASPARAGUS PASTA TASTE LIKE?
It literally tastes exactly what it sounds. The recipe is very pesto and buttery and garlicky. The parmesan adds enough creaminess so it’s not super heavy and is the right amount. The flavours all come together really well and simply reminds me of spring!
HOW LONG DOES IT KEEP FOR?
The pasta actually kept in great condition for a while! I was actually surprised when I ate it 4 days later and just reheated it in the microwave! The trick to it being kept well for so long is definitely not overcooking the asparagus so it’s crunchy and not soggy.
INSPIRATIONS FOR THIS DISH?
No inspiration for this dish. As a child, I was the only one in my group of family and friends who absolutely loved pesto while everyone else loved basic tomato or alfredo sauce. I love asparagus and thought of how delicious these two would be combined.
ANY OTHER NOTES?
No other notes for this one! I hope that you enjoy it and it becomes one of those dishes that you look forward to enjoying once spring rolls around and its asparagus season!

- 1 Cup Pasta Water
- 1/4 Cup Parmesan
- Salt to taste

- Once the asparagus is done and still crunchy, remove it from heat and transfer it to a bowl.
- In the same saucepot, add in your pesto and pasta water and let the sauce thicken up slightly. Be sure to scrap all the buttery garlicky goodness on the side.
- Add as much parmesan cheese as you want and let it melt and make the sauce creamy.
- Turn off the heat and add in your pasta then asparagus. Give it one more toss to coat everything together.
- Serve and enjoy!
That concludes this delicious spring recipe! I hope you get to make this and enjoy it by yourself or with friends and family!
