Hope your Monday wasn’t so bad! As much as I adore travelling, nothing beats being home ❤️
The only word that I could describe our Mexican Honeymoon Vacation is blessed. The reason I used the word blessed is because there are millions of people in the world that will never get to experience travelling and I am so blessed and lucky to be able to have this chance! Travelling to Mexico was very eye-opening for me as it was so far out of my comfort zone as 1) I’ve never travelled without my parents 2) Lawrence hasn’t travelled anywhere besides states in 9 years 3) We booked it in a rush
We were dreading spending this money. We got married in September and we were going to go straight after the wedding but thought what is the rush and planned it about a month and a half later. It worked out because we had a lot of family from out of town so it was nice to spend a little extra time with them before they left!
Lawrence and I kept pushing and pushing to book our vacation and literally about 3 and a half weeks beforehand we finally pushed ourselves to book it. We’ve spent so much for the wedding and the whole year basically as we moved out together so it was really hard for us to just do it!

We finally booked our Mexican honeymoon with the help of our travel rewards credit card and Expedia, we found an excellent reviewed 5-star all-inclusive resort called El Dorado Seaside Suites – Riviera Maya. Our stay was 5 nights and about 6 days for about $3500 CAD altogether. We added a whole day excursion of a trip to Tulum- Mayan Ruins, Snorkeling in the ocean and Swimming through a Cenote cave for $104 USD per person. We brought about $200 USD in 5’s and 1’s for tipping.
Travelling is definitely something I’ll never regret spending on!
Now, here’s my ups, downs and take always from my Mexican Honeymoon!
Ups
- Everyone at the resort was over-friendly
- Unlimited Food
- Never ending drinks
- The resort staff made us feel safe
- Paying extra for a whole day excursion out of the resort
Downs
- Room was dated and very very basic for the amount we paid for
- During the bus ride for the excursion, people kept switching which made us a little nervous and we traveled to really remote beaches and jungles
- Had to dress up for dinner every night in every restaurant unless you wanted room service
Tips
- You don’t need to splurge in a 5-star hotel. All the resorts are gated. If you’re feeling nervous, try booking with a brand that you’re familiar with (Holiday Inn, Hilton, Marriott etc)

- We were caught in a week of on and off rainstorms so if you can’t take too much heat, it’s a good but risky time to go (expect trip delays) but if you love the sun, make sure you check what month is best to go!
- There are so many things to do at the resort! As soon as you get there, take the 20 mins to plan out your week (where/what to eat & activities) but be sure to leave room for some do-nothing time, haha you’ll thank me later!
- If you plan to save money in just bringing a carry on bag then prepare to buy a few items at the gift shops. If you’re bringing a checked-in bag, it doesn’t hurt to bring some products that you’re comfortable with! I usually use Pantene as shampoo and since I was swimming in the ocean water a lot, my hair got super tangled and the hotel shampoo just didn’t do it for me. I also forgot toothpaste! The gift shop has super overpriced products so just beware! With WestJet, check-in baggage is $30 for your first bag one way so think about allotting $60 if you’re budgeting strictly during your trip.
- Last but not least, tipping! Tipping is always up to the person. I had no idea what to tip but like I said up in my last post, I was super blessed to even be on this trip so I was very generous. I watched the people around me and a lot of them didn’t tip!
This is how my tipping went on my Mexican Honeymoon:
- $2-5 dollars for the maids – depending on my level of mess. I generally just did $3 but one day, they left the room floors completely wet without a sign ($2) and one time, I spilled food all over the floor ($5) Haha
- $5 – all bus drivers. This is for transportation to the resort and back. $5 USD each way.
- $20 – tour guide & tour driver They spent the whole day, taking care of us
- $5 the first time you go to that bar, $1 or $2 when they serve it to you in your beach chair
- $3-5 every server at any of the restaurants!
