Read more for all the details on Garlic Butter Mashed Potatoes.
Mashed Potatoes are the most popular Thanksgiving side out there! Warm oven-baked turkey, mashed potatoes and gravy?! Yes, please!
There are some people who don’t like mashed potatoes and I totally understand. The texture is really mushy and soft but on the plus side, less chewing!
I have a love/hate relationship with mashed potatoes. I strangely find that aside from certain things, I don’t love super-soft food! The only way I love mashed potatoes is when they are loaded with cream, garlic and butter! I don’t mash mine that much so there are still some pieces of potato that you can chew.
My husband on the other hand loves the super well mashed, mashed potatoes! This is similar to why I can’t get into oatmeal!
Do you like mashed potatoes?! What are your favourite things to put in it? I’d love to know!
PIN Garlic Butter Mashed Potatoes FOR LATER:
For a few years now, I have been on mashed potatoes duty for my family. They love my recipe because I literally use as much butter and cream as I can!
I know, this really isn’t a healthy recipe BUT on the holidays, when you’re enjoying the day with loved ones, calories are out the window! It’s super easy to make and it uses very few ingredients.
This Garlic Butter Mashed Potato side is extremely creamy, buttery and garlicky. It pairs perfectly with any protein and brown or turkey gravy.
What’s your favourite Thanksgiving or holiday side? I’d love to know in the comments below!
HERE IS HOW TO MAKE Garlic Butter Mashed Potatoes:
WHERE CAN I FIND THESE INGREDIENTS?
The ingredients for these Garlic Butter Mashed Potatoes can be found at your local grocery store. You’ll need some produce like potatoes and garlic and look, you can technically use any potatoes but I find yellow potatoes extremely soft and yummy.
Next, you’ll need some dairy which in this recipe, I use half and half cream and salted butter. Last but not least, you’ll need your seasonings which are super simple. I used salt, onion powder, garlic powder and dried parsley for garnish.
WHAT ARE THE INGREDIENTS?
The ingredients to make these delicious Garlic Butter Mashed Potatoes are:
- Yellow Potatoes
- Salted Butter
- Garlic
- Half and Half Cream
- Salt
- Onion Powder
- Garlic Powder
- Dried Parsley (for garnish)
WHAT EQUIPMENT DO I NEED?
For this Garlic Butter Mashed Potatoes recipe, you’ll need a big pot to boil the potatoes in as well as a small pot to infuse the garlic and butter. Alternatively, if you don’t want to use another pot, you can just infuse the garlic and butter in a bowl through the microwave. You’ll need to heat this up in 30-second increments.
Aside from that, you’ll need a potato masher and if you want to make it super soft a potato ricer to make mashing easier. Having a few spatulas and spoons are also great for incorporating the cream and butter and tasting!
WHAT ARE THE STEPS TO PREPARE?
The steps to prepare these Garlic Butter Mashed Potatoes are:
- Peel – your potatoes and garlic
- Cut – the garlic roughly and potatoes into even sized pieces (for even cooking)
- Boil – the potatoes so that they are fork tender
- Drain and Mash – the potatoes
- Infuse – both the garlic and butter together either on the stovepot or microwave
- Add – the cream, garlic butter and seasonings
- Mix – until everything is well combined
- Serve – and enjoy with your main entrees
CAN I SUB/ADD ANYTHING OUT?
Since this Garlic Butter Mashed Potatoes recipe is so easy, there’s not very much to substitute BUT the potatoes are totally up to you. Any potato basically works so whatever you prefer. I like to stick with either white or yellow potatoes!
As for the butter and cream, you are welcome to swap these out for vegan or dairy-free options! The seasonings should stay as there really isn’t a lot BUT you can add whatever seasonings your heart desires!
WHAT DOES IT TASTE LIKE?
This Garlic Butter Mashed Potatoes recipe tastes like heaven. I have served this time and time again and always get compliments! I made this batch to take photos a few months ago and served it with grilled steak and a side salad and I heard my guests moaning when they took a bite! It’s hard to dislike buttery and creamy things!
HOW LONG DOES IT KEEP FOR?
I usually don’t have too many leftovers but when I do, I try and only keep it in the fridge for 3 days. I’ve honestly never froze mashed potatoes so I couldn’t tell you how well it would be in the freezer. Be sure that you keep your mashed potatoes in an airtight container placed in a cold fridge. It does contain dairy which spoils faster than most foods so it’s good to be on the safe side!
WHAT GOES WITH THIS Garlic Butter Mashed Potatoes?
These Garlic Butter Mashed Potatoes go with so many things! Some food that goes with these mashed potatoes include:
- Grilled Steak – with a side salad, yum!

- Cheesy Mash Potatoes – I imagine this is what scalloped potatoes would taste like mashed

INSPIRATIONS FOR THIS DISH?
Honestly, I don’t really have any inspirations for this dish. The basics of mashed potatoes are butter, cream, and potatoes but I just like the taste of garlic butter and wanted to incorporate this in a recipe. I eat fairly healthy most of the week so whenever there’s a holiday or a party, I love to indulge!
These garlic butter mashed potatoes are one of many dishes that I love indulging in during the holidays. I love the creaminess and salty garlic butter to these mashed potatoes! I’ve had my fair share of mashed potatoes and some people make them very plain and bland and to me, it’s just not worth it! All or nothing, baby!
HOW CAN I MEAL PREP THIS RECIPE?
The best way to eat this Garlic Butter Mashed potato is immediately BUT on the rare occasion that you have leftovers, you can store this in the fridge for up to 3 days and meal prep it in a glass container so you can heat it up!
Pro tip: make a hole in the middle so your mashed potatoes are heated evenly!
ANY OTHER NOTES?
Just to state the obvious, this dish is very VERY heavy so if you’re dedicated to counting calories then you might not want to have this! It is very much worth it and super delicious but again, there’s not a lot of nutritional value in potatoes and the cream and butter are plentiful!
If you want to take the easy way out, you totally can! All you would need to do is buy premade garlic butter to skip a few steps! You’d still need to put in the cream to keep this dish creamy but there’s pre-made garlic butter at most grocery stores that you can just purchase.

I love mashed potatoes, but I prefer it with the peels on since it’s how my dad always made it. My daughter & partner love mashed potatoes too, but I have to peel the potatoes for them to eat it…
Anyways I should add some garlic the next time I make mashed potatoes to up the flavor a bit!
Yes! I don’t mind it with peels either! Some restaurants that I like do it this way. Pleasure to have you on the blog as always, Karalee x

Thanks for sharing this recipe and tips! I LOVE garlic mashed potatoes. I have been usually just using a box version which is subpar compared to using fresh potatoes. But I do struggle with making the potatoes evenly mashed. I’m thankful you’ve shared this and can’t wait to try it out. If I can make good garlic mashed potatoes, I’ll be the star of Thanksgiving dinner parties!
I used to do the box version a lot in college! I miss it. I’m going to add it to my shopping list. So good and convenient! Thanks for reading, Nicole x
I have always enjoyed eating mashed potatoes. This mixture seems really tasty.
