My favourite part about the holidays is the fact that treats are always acceptable! I am always looking for an excuse to bake delicious holiday treats and these frosted peppermint brownies really hit the spot!
These peppermint brownies are so delicious on it’s own but to make it extra special, I’ve created a simple peppermint cream cheese frosting to go on top! If you love crunchy sugary candy canes, you’ll love this recipe!

HERE IS HOW TO MAKE FROSTED PEPPERMINT BROWNIES:
WHERE CAN I FIND THESE INGREDIENTS?
You can find most of the ingredients available all year round aside from the candy canes and perhaps the peppermint extract. You may be lucky to find candy canes all year round but normally, you would see them starting to come out around the month of September annually!
Aside from this, these two ingredients being hard to find, everything else is fairly straight forward! You can find everything in the baking section of your grocery store as well as the dairy section!
WHAT ARE THE INGREDIENTS?
This recipe is a two-part recipe! Here is what you’ll need for each part:
Peppermint Brownies
- Unsalted Butter
- Brown Sugar
- Sugar
- Eggs
- Vanilla Extract
- Peppermint Extract
- Flour
- Cocoa Powder
- Baking Powder
- Chocolate Chips/Chunks
Candy Cane Frosting
- Cream Cheese
- Icing Sugar
- Crushed Candy Canes
- Peppermint Extract
- Vanilla Extract
WHAT EQUIPMENT DO I NEED?
For the most part, this recipe is quite simple and is not as intricate as other baking recipes so you would really only need your general baking equipment! You’ll want to have some measuring cups and spoons, mixing bowls, spatulas, baking pan and a mixer. I normally just hand mix everything but an electric or stand mixer would be awesome to use!
Here are some of my Amazon kitchen and baking favs!
CAN I SUBSTITUTE/ADD ANYTHING OUT?
You sure can! I haven’t personally done any substitutions to this recipe so if you have any dietary restrictions or lifestyle you follow, please do try some substitutions! A few substitution/addition ideas I do have in mind are:
- Using vegan/vegetarian products for the milk, butter etc
- Adding in some white or dark chocolate chips instead
- Creating a more special cream cheese buttercream instead
- Adding some candy canes into the brownies
- Adding in some nuts or dried fruits to the brownie mixture
WHAT DO FROSTED PEPPERMINT BROWNIES TASTE LIKE?
These brownies are the ultimate dream for a peppermint chocolate lover! The brownie itself so very chewy and rich while the creamy peppermint cream cheese frosting on top balances the whole bite! Each brownie piece also has crushed candy canes on top so every bite has a crunchy sugary texture to it!
HOW LONG DOES IT KEEP FOR?
These brownies keep very well in the fridge! I personally would not leave it longer than 5 days as the cream cheese frosting can spoil! Honestly, these don’t last longer than 2 days in my fridge and are easily shareable! Make these and share them with friends, family, neighbours and coworkers!
INSPIRATIONS FOR THIS RECIPE?
I love anything with candy canes because I love the crunchy sugar! One of my fav treats to make for the holidays is either my Candy Cane Chocolate Chip Cookies or Candy Cane Chocolate Bark so you get the picture!
I thought of how delicious it would be to take my favourite brownie recipe and make it all festive and into a holiday frosted peppermint brownie recipe!
ANY OTHER NOTES?
I frosted it before cutting and it got pretty messy so if you do want to avoid a huge mess, you may want to cut the brownies first and then frosted them individually but it just may take a little more time to do so!
Frosted Peppermint Brownies
Ingredients
Peppermint Brownies
- 1/2 Cup Unsalted Butter melted
- 1/2 Cup Brown Sugar
- 1/2 Cup White Sugar
- 2 Eggs
- 1 tsp Vanilla Extract
- 2 tsp Peppermint Extract
- 1/2 Cup Flour
- 1/2 Cup Cocoa Powder
- 1/4 tsp Baking Powder
- 1/4 Cup Chocolate Chips/Chunks
Candy Cane Cream Cheese Frosting
- 1 Block Cream Cheese
- 1/4 Cup Icing Sugar
- 1/2 Cup Crushed Candy Canes
- 1 tsp Vanilla Extract
- 1/2 tsp Peppermint Extract
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 350F and line a square 9×9" baking pan with parchment paper.
- In a large bowl, add in your melted butter, brown and white sugar, eggs, and vanilla and peppermint extract fully mix well together.
- Next add in your flour, cocoa powder, baking powder and mix again.
- Once all ingredients are fully combined, add in your chocolate chips/chunks and fold it slowly so it's even distributed in the batter.
- Pour brownie batter into the square baking pan and make sure to spread the layer evenly to each corner so it will bake evenly .
- Bake in the oven for 20 to 30 minutes or until the middle is fully cooked. You can test it by poking the middle with a toothpick or small knife and seeing the knife come out clean.
- While you're waiting for the brownies to bake, you can start on your cream cheese frosting by combining all the ingredients in a bowl and mixing everything together. Fold in the candy canes last as the colour of the candy canes will come off in the frosting. Let frosting chill in the fridge!
- Once your brownies are done, let cool for 30 minutes – 1 hour then frost the tops of the brownies. Optional: Add a little more crushed candy canes on top.
- Serve and enjoy!
Hope you enjoy this recipe! Thanks for trying it out <3
