Read more for all the details on Unsweetened Oat Milk.
I was debating making this into a post but honestly, I did not think making Unsweetened Oat Milk was that easy! I never thought of making it myself and since I just released my Budget Friendly Iced Coffee, why not make a simple Oat Milk recipe too!
Now, wait for it…. What are the ingredients you say? Quite literally oats and water.
Hence the reason why I didn’t know whether to make this recipe post or not BUT if you are like me, I didn’t think it was easy. For a good year and half or so, I bought my own Unsweetened Oat Milk which can cost me close to $10-12 a month whereas now, it costs me $6 for 2-3 months!
The thing that I love about Oat Milk is that is it is the right amount of creamy and the taste is so subtle. I feel like with Almond milk, it is too watery and light. Coconut milk is TOO thick and the flavor changes your coffee dramatically. Rice milk is okay, I don’t mind it and cashew milk, I can’t stand!

I know that you could totally take the easy way out and just purchase in stores but I don’t know about everyone but I really like knowing what goes into my food.
The bigger brand of Oat milks definitely put a lot more than just oats and water into their mixture which is not a bad thing but I like fully knowing what’s in mine!
HERE IS HOW TO MAKE Easy Unsweetened Oat Milk:
WHERE CAN I FIND THESE INGREDIENTS?
I prefer using Rolled Oats but have used Steel Cut Oats as well and it worked okay! With Steel cut, you’ll just have to soak them for longer. You can find these ingredients anywhere. Oatmeal, I believe is eaten in many cultures. Depending on if you want to spruce it up, you can add other flavoring to it. I like it unsweetened as I sometimes add sugar or syrup to my coffees!
WHAT ARE THE INGREDIENTS?
The ingredients are oats and water. If you want to make different variations, here are some ideas:
Vanilla Oat Milk: Add 1/2 tsp of Vanilla Extract
Maple Oat Milk: Add 1/2 tsp of Maple Syrup
Chocolate oat Milk: Add 1/2 Tsp of Cocoa Powder
Peanut Butter/Nutella: Add 1 Tbsp of Either
and my personal favourite:
Pumpkin Spice: Add 1/2 Tsp of Pumpkin Spice Mix & 1/4 Tsp of Vanilla Extract
One thing people do add in for extra creaminess is a drop or two of neutral (sunflower or canola oil)! I personally don’t need it but totally up to you!
CAN I SUB ANYTHING OUT?
As this is strictly an oat milk recipe, I wouldn’t but there are lots of easy recipes for different non-dairy
“milks” out there! I would love to do an almond milk recipe in the near future as well.
WHAT DOES IT TASTE LIKE?
My favorite brand of oat milk is Earth’s Own and its one that I’m dedicated to. I’ve have tried pretty much every brand out there and do have this in my fridge at all times. It does just get quite expensive as I use oat milk to bake as well! Will try and make the switch to just fully make my oat milk from now on!
Unsweetened Oat Milk
Equipment
- Blender
- Nut Bag or Cheese Cloth
Ingredients
- 1 Cup Rolled Oats
- 2 Cups Cold Water
Instructions
- Add in your oats and water into a blender
- Let the oats sit and soak in blender for 1-2 minutes. *IMPORTANT* If you leave rolled oats soaking for longer than 1-2 minutes, the sliminess will increase and the oats WILL soak all the water. Steel oats can soak for longer – about 20 minutes.
- Once done soaking, blend all together for 2-3 minutes. Strain through a nut bag 1-3 times, pour into a container and store in the fridge for up to a week.
This is a super simple and easy recipe that I wanted to share with you all. I love anything I can make myself because I know what goes in it!
Oat milk captured my heart and I am certain I won’t be switching over to another substitution any time soon.
What is your favorite non-dairy substitution? Do you make it at home or purchase it in store?! I’d love to know in the comments below!

I personally never tried oat mil. I’ve heard that a lot of people choose it over cow milk. The price is definitely that put me off. After reading your recipe I might actually give it a go. Thank you for sharing!

I’d love to make my own milks but I tend to buy the fortified ones to give me a little boost and I’m not sure how/ if that’s possible at home. I’m glad you’ve realised how easy this is though, you’ll save soooo much over a year if you stick with it. I’m a little addicted to vanilla soy right now x
