HERE IS HOW TO MAKE SWEET POTATO COTTAGE PIE:
WHERE CAN I FIND THESE INGREDIENTS?
To make Easy Sweet Potato Cottage Pie, you can find the ingredients at various places, including:
- Grocery Stores: Your local grocery store is a convenient option. Look for ground meat (such as beef or lamb), frozen vegetables (like corn, carrots, onions, and peas), and common pantry items (flour, butter, stock, etc.). Sweet potatoes are usually available in the produce section.
- Butcher Shops: For high-quality and specific cuts of meat, consider visiting a butcher shop. They can provide freshly ground meat and offer advice on the best options for your cottage pie.
- Farmers’ Markets: If you prefer fresher and locally-sourced ingredients, farmers’ markets are a great choice. You can often find fresh produce and sometimes even meat from local farmers.
- Online Grocery Retailers: If you have difficulty finding specific ingredients locally or prefer online shopping, explore online grocery retailers. Many offer a wide range of ingredients, including meat, vegetables, and pantry staples.
- Specialty Stores: Some specialty stores offer unique and artisanal ingredients that can enhance the quality and flavor of your cottage pie.
Remember to check the labels for quality and freshness. WHAT ARE THE INGREDIENTS?
The ingredients to make this sweet potato cottage pie are:
- Mashed Sweet Potato
- Milk
- Butter
- Salt
- Ground Beef
- Frozen Vegetables
- Cottage/Shepherd’s Pie Seasoning Mix
- Flour (optional)
- Shredded Cheese
WHAT EQUIPMENT DO I NEED?
This recipe is definitely a bit heavy on the dishes however, it is so worth it! You’ll need a small sauce pot to make your mashed sweet potatoes, another small sauce pot for your ground beef mixture, and a deep square/rectangle baking dish to assemble it all together.
Here are some of my kitchen Amazon faves!
CAN I SUBSTITUTE/ADD ANYTHING OUT?
You sure can! This recipe is not authentic AT ALL. Originating from the UK, this dish is generally made with regular white potatoes and does not have cheese on top. With a more traditional Cottage pie, ground beef is used as the meat, and with Shepherd’s pie, ground lamb is used.
I love having sweet and savory dishes and while I love using regular potatoes, I actually prefer sweet potatoes now. This recipe is such a wholesome comforting dish that I love making come Fall. There are a lot of moving parts to this recipe but that first bite (and all the leftovers) make it that much worth it!
So some substitutes for this dish are, of course, the sweet potato, you can use regular potato if you’d like. You can also swap out the protein to fit your diet. Lean ground turkey works super well with this too! Frozen veggies like peas, carrots, and corn are standard but you can use whatever small frozen pack of vegetables you have for ease.
I used shredded mozzarella cheese for this one but again, use any cheese that you’d like!
WHAT DOES SWEET POTATO COTTAGE PIE TASTE LIKE?
Easy Sweet Potato Cottage Pie offers a delightful blend of savory and sweet flavors, creating a comforting and satisfying taste experience. Here’s what you can expect:
- Savory Meat Filling: The meat filling, often made with ground beef or lamb, is savory, rich, and seasoned with aromatic herbs and spices. It has a hearty and comforting flavor that’s deeply satisfying.
- Aromatic Vegetables: The vegetables, like corn, carrots, onions, and peas, add a layer of aromatic and earthy flavors to the pie. They enhance the overall taste profile and provide texture and balance.
- Creamy Sweet Potato Topping: The sweet potato mash topping brings a unique sweetness and creaminess to the dish. It’s slightly sweet, buttery, and velvety, offering a delightful contrast to the savory meat filling.
- Harmonious Blend: The combination of the savory meat filling and the sweet potato topping creates a harmonious and well-balanced taste. The contrast of flavors makes each bite enjoyable and comforting.
- Comforting and Wholesome: Overall, Easy Sweet Potato Cottage Pie is a warm and wholesome dish that delivers the comfort of classic cottage pie with the added sweetness and richness of sweet potatoes.
The result is a delicious and satisfying meal that’s perfect for cooler weather or anytime you’re seeking a hearty and comforting dish with a touch of sweetness. It’s a delightful twist on the traditional cottage pie that’s sure to please your taste buds and warm your soul.
HOW LONG DOES IT KEEP FOR?
An Easy Sweet Potato Cottage Pie can last for about 3 to 5 days when properly stored in the refrigerator. To extend its shelf life, cover it tightly with plastic wrap or aluminum foil to prevent moisture loss and protect it from absorbing odors from other foods.
When reheating, make sure to heat it thoroughly to an internal temperature of 165°F (74°C) to ensure food safety. For longer storage, you can also freeze the pie for up to 2-3 months. Just wrap it tightly in plastic wrap and aluminum foil, or use an airtight container, before placing it in the freezer. Be aware that freezing may affect the texture slightly, particularly with the sweet potato topping, but it should still be delicious and safe to eat.
INSPIRATIONS FOR THIS RECIPE?
I grew up in a Filipino household so most of what my mom cooked was Filipino-based recipes. There was this one time I visited one of my aunties whose husband is Scottish and she made the most delicious Shepherd’s Pie that I’ll never forget!
It was my first time ever trying something like this and I was in love. She didn’t even prepare it in a traditional way either haha, she put loads of cheese on top which come to think of it is probably why I loved it so much! The perfect meal for a 10-year-old girl is most likely containing a ton of melted cheese.
I continued to make it as I grew up and started cooking more and I’ve made different variations of it. This sweet potato cottage pie recipe is probably my favorite variation!
ANY OTHER NOTES?
I listed one of the ingredients – Flour as optional because you don’t really need it, I rarely do it but the ground beef mixture definitely expels a lot of juices and liquids so if you’re wanting a more dry mixture then you can add 2 tsp of flour to soak it up but if you don’t mind then you don’t need to put it! I actually act like the juices are like my gravy haha.

Karalee says
I’ve always made cottage pies with regular potatoes, but I never thought about using sweet potatoes. I love sweet potatoes, so I’ll definitely have to try it! Since I’m vegetarian, I use mushrooms and other veggies for the filling, but my partner and our daughter eat the normal beef one.
