I’ve known 2 types of people in this world. The people who love candy corn and the people who hate it!
Then there’s me, who simply does not hate it but I will most definitely try a piece or two every Halloween! The thing with candy corn for me is the sugary taste. I don’t like incredibly sweet desserts and food in general so anything that’s super sweet is just not for me!
That’s pretty much why I don’t have more than a piece of two but I still love that it embodies Halloween!
Have you ever had candy corn before? Are you on team love candy corn or hate candy corn? I’d love to know!
PIN Candy Corn Rice Krispies Treats FOR LATER:
Luckily, these treats do not have any candy corn in them BUT it is super fun to make them look like candy corn! This is actually the first time I’ve made rice krispies before! A lot of my friends back in elementary and high school would bring rice krispies for bake sales and just to share but it never enticed me to make it myself.
It wasn’t until I started planning my Halloween content and knew I wanted to incorporate candy corn in what I was releasing this year! I thought about decorating sugar cookies but I have to admit, I am terrible at cookie and cake decorating and it takes me a long time to get anywhere near perfection or deliciousness for that matter!
If you’re a constant reader of the blog, you know that we’re all about easy recipes and what’s easier than a rice krispies treat?! It’s literally rice krispies cereal, butter, marshmallows, and vanilla extract! To make these candy corn-looking, I just bought a Halloween cookie cutter set and gel food colouring!
Have you ever made rice krispies? Is it a treat that you love?! Let me know in the comments!
HERE IS HOW TO MAKE CANDY CORN RICE KRISPIES TREATS:
WHERE CAN I FIND THESE INGREDIENTS?
The ingredients to make these super easy candy corn rice krispies treats are available at most grocery stores! I believe marshmallows are available at most local department or groceries stores around the world. Butter is either in your fridge or again, can be available at any stores! This recipe doesn’t require too much butter too so you may already have some on hand!
Rice Krispies also is a common cereal and will be available at the store. If not, you can always buy rice krispies cereal, marshmallows and vanilla extract online as they are non-perishable items!
To make these candy corn-looking, you’ll need orange and yellow food colouring as well!
WHAT ARE THE INGREDIENTS?
The ingredients to make these awesome Halloween candy corn rice krispies treat are:
- Rice Krispies Cereal
- Regular Sized Marshmallows
- Salted butter
- Vanilla Extract
- Orange & Yellow Gel Food Colouring
WHAT TYPE OF MARSHMALLOWS SHOULD I USE?
The exact marshmallows I used for this recipe are from the brand Kraft. There’s a photo above but it’s the Jet-Puffed Original marshmallows. Honestly, any size or brand of marshmallows works! I’ve seen a lot of recipes use mini marshmallows as they melt a lot easier but I used the regular-sized ones as they were on sale at the time!
I honestly love off-brand marshmallows as well. I find them a little less sweet than branded marshmallows! I often pick up the store brand for smores when we have a camping trip!
WHAT IS THE TIME BREAKDOWN TO MAKE THIS RECIPE?
These Candy Corn Rice Krispies Treats are super quick and easy to make! You actually have to work a bit fast as you need to use the candy corn cookie cutter while the rice krispies are not fully cooled so they end up being harder to cut! The time breakdown for this recipe is:
To Prepare – this includes measuring all the ingredients and preparing them so you can move quickly
Time: 10 Minutes
To Cook – this includes melting the butter, marshmallows, vanilla extract and gel food colouring on the stovetop
Time: 10 Minutes x 3
To Cool and Cut – this includes lining a container with parchment paper, placing the layers of rice krispies and cutting them into candy corn shapes
Time: 12 Minutes
Total time from start to finish: approx. 52 minutes
WHAT EQUIPMENT DO I NEED?
The equipment needed to make these Candy Corn Rice Krispies are a small saucepan, spatula, glass container or baking sheet at least 2 inches deep and a candy corn cookie cutter. You’ll hopefully have all these items at home already but the cookie cutters. I bought a Halloween pack from Amazon that I love and will continue using!
WHAT ARE THE STEPS TO PREPARE?
The steps to make these Candy Corn Rice Krispies are:
- Prepare & Measure – all the ingredients and equipment needed
- Melt – the butter, marshmallows, vanilla extract and gel food colouring
- Layer & Cool – each colour of rice krispies. The order should be yellow, orange and white. Let cool for a few minutes then use a candy corn cookie cutter and cut each piece.
- Plate and Serve – and enjoy!
CAN I SUB/ADD ANYTHING OUT?
There really isn’t that much to substitute for these Candy Corn Rice Krispies! BUT if you’d like, you can most definitely substitute the regular rice krispies cereal for a brown rice one that’s gluten-free! As well as use vegan marshmallows and butter.
Other than that, the Wilson gel food colouring is vegan and so is the vanilla extract!
As far as adding things, you know that I will never say no! You can add whatever toppings or items you’d like to these. Chocolate chips, sprinkles, glitter, the sky is the limit for these ones!
WHAT DOES IT TASTE LIKE?
These Candy Corn Rice Krispies are the best treat to have in the months leading up to Halloween! I admit that when I made these, I had one every day around 2-3 pm when I needed a pick me up! I liked making these Candy Corn Rice Krispies because they aren’t too sweet. I find that if you buy these packaged from the store, they are so nauseatingly sweet but homemade ones aren’t as bad.
The texture is perfect! It’s definitely very sticky as it is melted marshmallows after all. They are soft and crunchy which is nice to bite. I also love that they are firm. I pressed on it to make it firm so if you don’t want it to be that firm, just be more gentle with them and avoid overpressing!
HOW LONG DOES IT KEEP FOR?
These Candy Corn Rice Krispies keep for up to a week, if they even last that long! Be sure to keep them in a good airtight container or if you’re serving this, to make sure that it’s wrapped well so they don’t get stale fast!

INSPIRATIONS FOR THIS DISH?
This inspiration to make these Candy Corn Rice Krispies really came from brainstorming what Halloween content I wanted to put out this year. Candy corn is known to embody the spirit of Halloween even though everyone hates it!
I knew that I wanted to incorporate candy corn in some form this season and instead of using actual candy corn, I thought it would be awesome to do a candy corn shape dessert.
Rice Krispies were often made and bought at bake sales when I was younger at school and although I’ve never made them for myself, I wanted to try to do it this year!
I didn’t even realize how easy it would be to assemble before actually doing it! In the future, I’ll be bringing these to Halloween-themed parties that I’m going to.
HOW CAN I MEAL PREP THIS RECIPE?
I love answering this question when it comes to meal prepping desserts and treats! Like I said above, when I made this batch, I had one every day till I finished it around 3 pm as a pick me up when my energy levels were low and I wanted to keep on working!
I kept these in one container but if you are packing them on the go as a single serving, you can definitely just wrap them in plastic wrap or any reusable wrap as long as they are wrapped tightly so they don’t go stale!
They are fresh for up to 7 days so just make sure to avoid them getting air.
COST OF THIS CANDY CORN RICE KRISPIES TREATS?
These candy corn rice Krispies treats use very few ingredients so you’ll be able to make a bunch of batches!
Based on my groceries in CAD, if you were buying EVERYTHING from scratch:
Candy Corn Rice Krispies Treats
- Kellogg’s Rice Krispies (440g) – $5.45
- Marshmallows (400g) – $2.40
- Salted Butter (454g) – $5.65
- Pure Vanilla Extract (46ml) – $7.65
- Gel Colouring (12 jars – 14.1g) – $30.79
Total: $51.94 (not all the ingredients were used and leftovers can be used for other recipes)
As all of these ingredients are new, if you just priced out the actual ingredients used in this Candy Corn Rice Krispies Treats, it would come up to about $10.
ANY OTHER NOTES?
Yes! Actually, I have a fair amount of notes for these Candy Corn Rice Krispies Treats.
- You need to move a bit fast as you don’t want them to fully cool and get hard before using the cutter.
- The size of your layers should be based on the size of the cookie cutter. Keep your cookie cutter close for reference!
- I made huge ones that are about 3 inches thick! If you want to make thinner ones, you’ll just need to thin out the layers as well.
- Again, try and not let them get too much air as they will be stale faster!
