You can find the ingredients to make Easy Asian Peanut Butter Chicken at your local grocery store, in the international or Asian foods aisle. Alternatively, you can also purchase them online for convenience. The only real specialty ingredient you’ll need is hoisin sauce which is salty and tangy almost like a ketchup-like texture.
WHAT ARE THE INGREDIENTS?
The ingredients to make this delicious peanut butter chicken are:
- Chicken Thighs
- Garlic
- Sesame Oil
- Onion
- Hoisin Sauce
- Peanut Butter
- Water
- Salt (to taste)
- Pepper (to taste)

This recipe is a standard 1 pot/pan recipe which is always my favorite! Less mess less stress, am I right?! You should have all the equipment already at home but if you don’t you can easily purchase these at the dollar store, your local mall or department store, or even online from a quick retailer like Amazon!

CAN I SUBSTITUTE/ADD ANYTHING OUT?
I always encourage creativity when it comes to cooking so of course you can substitute or add anything you’d like to this recipe! This recipe has a good amount of protein as there is chicken and peanut butter however, you are welcome to add or substitute the meat with other sources of protein that you enjoy. Tofu, beef or beef are all great suggestions!
This peanut butter chicken is delicious over a bed of fresh hot white rice however, you can also just eat it with lettuce like lettuce wraps or you can mix in some noodles! YUM!
You can also add in some veggies to soak up the sauce like bok choy, cabbage, or even some broccoli.

HOW LONG DOES IT KEEP FOR?

This recipe is perfect to meal prep with so you can prepare containers with rice and peanut butter chicken on top and it heats great!
INSPIRATIONS FOR THIS RECIPE?
I’ve always loved peanut butter in dishes. Growing up Canadian-Filipino, my favorite dish ever is kare-kare which is a delicious rich peanut butter stew with lots of meat and vegetables. I am that girl who eats peanut butter by the spoonful so you know I would give any excuse to add peanut butter to my meals! Aside from my favorite Filipino dish being kare-kare, I also always make Vietnamese Spring Rolls with Peanut Sauce (Gỏi cuốn) whenever I have all the ingredients on hand.
This is technically where I got the inspiration for this dish as peanut sauce is pretty much comprised of peanut butter and hoisin sauce! I pretty much can drink this sauce so creating this peanut butter chicken just makes sense! I also created a Vietnamese Spring Roll Inspired Peanut Butter Rice Noodles recipe that I love too!
ANY OTHER NOTES?
The peanut butter can thicken up really quick so if it’s too thick, lower the heat and just add a tbsp of water at a time and stir it in to make it less thick! I honestly love a thick sauced stew but if you want a more runny sauce, do this and taste as you go!
Easy Asian Peanut Butter Chicken
Ingredients
- 3 Cloves Garlic minced
- 1/4 Sweet Onion minced
- 4-6 Boneless Chicken Thighs cubed, skinless optional
- 1 Tbsp Sesame Oil
- 1 1/2 Tbsp Hoisin Sauce
- 3 Tbsp Peanut Butter
- 1/3 Water stir in as added to your sauce thickness preference
Instructions
- On your stove, place your pan/pot on a burner and turn to MEDIUM-HIGH heat. Let pan warm up.
- Next, add in your sesame oil, garlic, and onions and saute for 1 minute.
- Add in your chicken thighs, let brown, and cook halfway for about 5-7 minutes.
- Once chicken has a nice color and is half way cooked, add in your hoisin sauce, peanut butter, and water.
- Let chicken cook on MEDIUM heat for 10-15 minutes. Cover pot with lid.
- Check the consistency of the sauce, add a tbsp of water if you want to lessen the thickness.
- Serve over hot white rice, garnish with green onions and crushed peanuts and enjoy!
