HERE IS HOW TO MAKE A TARO BOBA COSTUME:
WHAT ARE THE MATERIALS NEEDED FOR THIS DIY TARO BOBA COSTUME?
All you’ll need to put this pumpkin jack-o-lantern costume together is:
- Purple Top/Dress
- Black Bottoms (If wearing a top instead of a dress)
- Fabric Tape
- Black Felt Sheets
- Black Shoes
- Black Headband
WHAT EQUIPMENT DO I NEED?
Loved making this costume so much as all you’d really need for this is scissors! This Scotch brand fabric tape is my fav to use because it’s super easy to work with and you can remove it easily too! Since you’re cutting felt sheets, I suggest a really good pair of sharp scissors or even specific fabric scissors, however, I’m always a big fan of using what you already own!
CAN I SUB ANYTHING OUT?
You sure can! I’m a huge advocate for using what you already have at home so if you want to be a different flavor of boba because you have a certain shirt/dress color that you’d like to use instead then go for it!
Some cute suggestions would be a strawberry milk tea boba, if you have a pink dress or shirt, or even a brown sugar milk tea boba with a brown dress or shirt!
If you have an old black T-shirt you don’t care for, you can use that instead of felt sheets to save some time and money!
I made a black felt sheet bubble tea straw because that’s just what I had on hand but it is a bit flimsy. If you have black construction paper, that would work well too, and have a bit more structure.
DOES THE COSTUME LAST TO USE FOR THE FOLLOWING YEARS?
Yes, definitely! This costume is super low maintenance and if you use good fabric tape, you should be good to go for years to come! Your tape really determines the longevity of the costume but luckily since this costume is so quick to create, you’ll have no problem just making it again if you plan to reuse it one day!
If you want to make the straw and boba permanently stick to the fabric/headband, you’ll want to opt out of the fabric tape and perhaps use fabric glue or even sew it on.
HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO MAKE?
This costume took me about 20-25 minutes to make but that’s just because I was distracted re-watching Gilmore Girls for the billionth time haha. If you’re efficient with cutting circle shapes with felt sheets and have a good sharp pair of scissors, it should take you no longer than 15 minutes
INSPIRATIONS FOR THIS COSTUME?
I was thinking of costumes to really easily make for little to no money and little to no effort and this was one I thought would be very cute! I scrolled through Pinterest trying to gain inspiration on what costumes I wanted to make this year and saw a few variations of this and knew that I could easily make this come to life with what I had at home! I love food costumes so much so I need that a bubble tea/boba costume would be absolutely perfect!
I think it turned out so cute and so perfect and appropriate for any setting. Teachers/students can wear this to school, employees could wear this to the office, people can dress it up and wear it to a Halloween costume party, OR parents can wear something cute while taking the kiddos trick or treating!
STEPS TO DO THIS DIY TARO BOBA COSTUME:
Step 1: Cut your black felt sheets into 5″ circles. The amount of boba pieces you cut is up to you! I cut about 10 circles when doing this project but didn’t end up using all.
Step 2: Add fabric tape onto each boba piece and stick them onto your purple top or dress towards the bottom of the top/dress as boba generally stays on the bottom of the cup.
Step 3: Roll up a felt sheet (or black paper, if you prefer this) and tape it shut so that it resembles a straw shape. Tape this straw onto your headband however you’d like the straw to show on you. You can alternatively place it on your shirt too if you don’t want to wear anything on your head.
Step 4: Put on your outfit, straw headband, and cute shoes, and have a great night!

Lynn

I LOVE boba tea, and this costume is adorable! I also think that’s a great idea to use the clothing you have as bubble tea does come in a variety of colors!
