UGH JUST UGH! Listen, I’m from BC, Canada and I used to work at McDonald’s and make burritos every morning. No matter how weird the burrito mix was to me, I loved eating burritos for breakfast! I loved making them and I loved eating them.
I left McDonald’s once I was about to graduate college and I stopped eating McDonald’s breakfast for a while. After a few months of not having breakfast burritos, one summer at the crack of dawn, my boyfriend (now husband) and I packed the car up for a lake day. We of course picked up bags full of McDonald’s to enjoy sunrise at the lake with some of my cousins and other family members.
I probably picked up about 15 breakfast sandwiches, 10 burritos, 20 hashbrowns and a bunch of coffees and juices. I was super excited to eat my burritos and have a lake day, only to open one up and see that they had them on whole wheat tortillas! Don’t get me wrong, I love whole wheat products but this was just not the time I wanted it. I don’t go to McDonald’s to eat healthily, you know? I like having McDonald’s as a treat!
Anyways, after that, I knew that I had to start making my own burritos at home and the way I make them seriously tastes like the McDonald’s ones! I do a huge batch of them then freeze them for later!

HERE IS HOW TO MAKE COPYCAT MCDONALD’S BREAKFAST BURRITOS:
WHERE CAN I FIND THESE INGREDIENTS?
The ingredients to make these super yummy Copycat McDonald’s Breakfast Burritos are available anywhere for the most part. I’m aware that not everything is available everywhere in the world but luckily the ingredients for these burritos are pretty common. You’ll of course need some white flour tortillas which can be found in the bakery section. You’ll need eggs and sliced cheese from dairy, breakfast sausage in the meat section, and last but not least, onions and peppers from the produce aisle.
WHAT ARE THE INGREDIENTS?
The full list of ingredients to make these Copycat McDonald’s Breakfast Burritos are:
- White Flour Tortillas
- Processed Sliced Cheese or American Cheese
- Breakfast Sausage (Any flavour works, I like maple!)
- Eggs
- Sweet Onions
- Multi-coloured Bell Peppers
- Green Onions (optional)
- Salt (to taste)
- Pepper (to taste)
WHAT TYPE OF TORTILLAS SHOULD I USE?
You’ve got to use white flour tortillas for these! As always though, you can substitute whatever ingredients you’d like in any of my recipes BUT I do truly believe that want makes these Copycat McDonald’s Breakfast Burritos is the white flour tortillas! Any other tortilla that you use that’s not white flour tortillas alter the taste.
WHAT IS THE TIME BREAKDOWN TO MAKE THIS RECIPE?
The time breakdown for these Copycat McDonald’s Breakfast Burritos are:
To Cook and Saute – the burrito filling eggs, sausage, onions and peppers
Time: 5-7 Minutes
To Assemble – each burrito on a white tortilla with sliced cheese and filling wrapped up
Time: 5 Minutes
To Toast – so that the outside of the burrito is golden brown (optional)
Time: 2 Minutes
Total time: > 15 Minutes
WHAT EQUIPMENT DO I NEED?
Honestly, you don’t need any special equipment to make these copycat McDonald’s breakfast burritos, you need a frying pan to cook the filling, a flat wood board so you can easily assemble each burrito easier and if you’re counting your calories or macros or wanting each burrito to be the same size, a few measuring cups!
CAN I SUB/ADD ANYTHING OUT?
As with every recipe that I have ever posted and every recipe that I will post moving forward, you can absolutely substitute or add any ingredient you’d like!
If you’d like to make this vegetarian or vegan, feel free to substitute the sausage and eggs for anything plant-based. You can also use your own plant-based cheese!
If you want to make this a little healthier or low carb, you can substitute the white tortilla for a whole wheat one or a low-carb tortilla! You can also substitute the whole egg with just egg whites and add in some other veggies like spinach, kale or mushrooms!
I always just use the regular pork sausage but you bet chicken, beef, turkey or any other sausage meat works too!
HOW LONG DOES IT KEEP FOR?
These burritos will keep up to 4 days in the fridge and up to a month in the freezer. Make sure that you wrap the burritos securely and warm them up before you eat them in a damn paper towel. I store my burritos in the freezer in a regular large ziplock bag for easy everyday access.
I made similar burritos every day when I was in college and it was super yummy and such a great morning meal prep idea!
INSPIRATIONS FOR THIS DISH?
If you read my whole rant at the beginning of this recipe post, you already know but basically, McDonald’s changed up their burrito tortilla so I felt the need to take matters into my own hands and start making them myself.
I love burritos and how easy they are to eat and enjoy!
HOW CAN I MEAL PREP THIS RECIPE?
So like I mentioned above, I loved taking breakfast burritos to school! They were easy to eat and saved me a lot of money every day. How I meal prep them would be once a month, I would make a good batch of them after 15 or so. I would wrap all my burritos then take damp pieces of paper towels and wrap them around the burrito then wrap them in aluminum foil and store them in the freezer.
On the day I eat one, I would take the burrito out of the freezer, unwrap the foil, place the burrito with the damp paper towel around it and heat it up for about 2-3 minutes depending on thickness. In the process, I would try and warm the foil with my hands because I usually place the burrito back in the foil after it’s heated.
Once it’s out of the oven, I remove the paper towel and wrap my burrito in the same foil and eat it while commuting to school! If you work from home or work in an office with plates and a microwave, you can always do the same process but instead of foil, just place your burrito on a plate, heat it up and eat it! I liked the foil because it kept everything together and prevented me from spilling the filling!
ANY OTHER NOTES?
No other notes for this one! Not the healthiest recipe but guaranteed one of the yummiest breakfast burritos ever! My husband and I know eat these any time of day with some tater tots or fries or greens on the side!
