Orange and Chocolate are definitely not a flavour for me BUT it is for my sister in law and I had to jump at the opportunity to make her a treat!
I have been working hard to expand my range in the food world and I’ve never ventured anything in the orange chocolate dessert variety. I asked if I could make her a treat for her birthday and she agreed! She said a chocolate mousse would be nice and she’s fond of orange and chocolate together.
Now, I live with my mother-in-law at the moment and she said she was going to the store and I asked her if she could get be a bag of oranges as I needed about 4-5 ish. She ended up bringing me back a bag of clementine’s which is my fault, I should’ve clarified more on what I was going to be using it for but I thought using clementine’s would be fine too!
This Clementine Chocolate Mousse reminds me of the Christmas Terry Chocolate Orange’s and I never hated them but they were never my preferred chocolates to indulge in! My parents also love orange chocolate too so I’ll have to recreate this mousse for them one day.
Do you like orange and chocolate together? Let me know in the comments below if you’d try Clementine Chocolate Mousse!
PIN Clementine Chocolate Mousse FOR LATER:
Orange chocolate is definitely a flavour that some people hate and some people love. Not a bad thing and it can definitely be acquired. I feel like one day, I’ll love chocolate and orange together. Especially when my whole family loves the Terry Chocolate Oranges!
I actually asked my sister-in-law for feedback on this Clementine Chocolate mousse after she had them and I always trust her opinion. She is brutally honest which is one of many qualities that I love about her. I was pleased to hear that she enjoyed it and wouldn’t change anything.
The only thing that was odd about this Clementine Chocolate Mousse was the watery liquid that was at the bottom but as this was my first mousse recipe, I did some research and the reason could’ve been because I didn’t whip the cream into hard peaks. I have a hand mixer so my hand was cramping so my fault but if you have a stand mixer, it would be much easier!
These were super fun and cute to photograph too! I enjoyed styling this. I tried making a few chocolate cups but I didn’t have silicone moulds so they didn’t end up looking too hot.
HERE IS HOW TO MAKE Clementine Chocolate Mousse:
WHERE CAN I FIND THESE INGREDIENTS?
Everything you need to make Clementine Chocolate Mousse is super easy to find at the grocery store. You can use an orange of your choice! I was thinking if I couldn’t get regular navel oranges, I would try to find blood oranges too as they would be beautiful!
WHAT ARE THE INGREDIENTS?
For the Mousse:
- Whipping Cream
- Icing Sugar
- Vanilla Extract
- Melted Semisweet Chocolate or Cocoa Powder
- Clementine’s
For the Candied Orange
- Water
- Sugar
- Clementine Slices
WHAT EQUIPMENT DO I NEED?
You’ll need a hand or stand mixer to whip the cream. A non-stick pan for the candied oranges and either a double boiler or microwave to melt the chocolate!
CAN I SUB ANYTHING OUT?
You can definitely sub the chocolate or clementine in this. Dark chocolate and white chocolate would be amazing for this recipe in lieu of semisweet chocolate. As for the clementines, regular navel oranges would be great as well as mandarins or blood oranges too! You don’t necessarily need the candied orange but it is really pretty if you’re serving it to guests! The chocolate shavings are fine to use as a garnish.
WHAT DOES IT TASTE LIKE?
When I was making the Clementine Chocolate Mousse and tasting it, the orange taste is much more subtle using clementines in my opinion. The taste creeps up on you and it was actually really good! I ate the leftovers and I enjoyed it. The chocolate wasn’t too sweet and definitely didn’t overpower the whole dessert.
HOW LONG DOES IT KEEP FOR?
It stores well in the fridge for about 2-3 days. Before eating, I suggest letting it chill for at least 6 hours before serving and only taking what you want to eat out of the fridge as it is heavy whipping cream and tends to go bad faster.
ANY OTHER NOTES?
- Make sure that you whip the cream really well until it is stiff or they may be a bit watery and will separate. I have a hand mixer so my hand cramped a little haha. It doesn’t change the flavour but it’s not pleasant if you’re serving it!
- If you want to add zest, just a note, clementine skin is very soft so it’s a bit difficult to get a nice zest.
- If you’re making the candied clementine slices as well, make sure to do this first to allow the orange slice to chill completely to roll in sugar!
Clementine Chocolate Mousse Topped With Candied Clementine Slices
Ingredients
Clementine Chocolate Mousse
- 2 Cups Heavy Whipping Cream
- 2 Cups Semisweet Chocolate Chips or 1/4 Cup of Cocoa Powder
- 2 Tsp Vanilla Extract
- 1/4 Cup Icing Sugar
- 4 Clementine's Juiced + Zest
Candied Clementine Slices
- 1 1/2 Cups Water
- 3/4 Cup Sugar
- 2 Clementine's Sliced
Instructions
Clementine Chocolate Mousse
- Melt chocolate chips in the microwave for about 2 minutes, stirring every 30 seconds. Then let chocolate cool for 5-7 minutes.
- Grab a large metal bowl and add in your heavy whipping cream. Beat the whipping cream until hard peaks form. Save bit of the plain whipped cream for garnish.
- Add in the vanilla, icing sugar, clementine juice and melted chocolate and quickly beat until everything is well combine. Don't forget to scrap the sides!
- Pipe the mousse into containers of choice. I used Ramekins for mine, cover and immediately put in the fridge to set.
Candied Clementine Slices
- In a non-stick pan, on medium-high heat, add in your water and sugar and let it come to a boil.
- Add in your clementine slices and cook until the fruit is translucent.
- Turn the heat down to medium-low heat and let the orange's sit in the syrup.
- Lay a parchment paper on the counter and carefully take out each clementine slice to dry. Make sure that each slice is separated!
- Right before serving, grab a bowl of sugar and coat each clementine slice and garnish it on the mousse with the plain whipped cream and orange zest!
I really enjoyed some up with this recipe. I have a lot to learn in the culinary world and I’m really excited to have this platform to do so!
I’d love to try and make orange chocolate cupcakes soon too or even experiment more with fruit and chocolate! I once knew a guy who was repulsed by fruit and chocolate together. One day, there was a cake and when he saw that there was fruit on top, he immediately did not want a slice which fair enough but I actually love fruit on top of cakes like black forest cakes!
What’s your favorite orange chocolate desserts? I’d love to know in the comments below!

I’m not usually one for chocolate-y treats, but I do adore clementines – in fact, they may be my favorite fruit. I’ve never thought to combine them with chocolate, but the comparison to those chocolate oranges has me drooling a little bit (I love those)! I might have to try this out for myself sometime soon!
