Read more for all the details on Canadian Butter Tarts.
Spring has been fully coming out where I live and it’s super exciting! There is nothing better than longer and brighter days after a cold dark winter.
I was born and raised in the West Coast of Canada and I honestly don’t see myself leaving anytime soon. Everything about BC is gorgeous but totally expensive haha! That’s definitely the only downside. I can’t wait to purchase a home but honestly, I don’t even know when and if I’ll be able to! We’ll have to see what the future holds.
I have been wanting to make a Canadian recipe for a long time but honestly, there isn’t a lot out there. There are lots of indigenous recipes but I would love to be respectful and try it out in a restaurant or shop first before I get all excited about re-creating one.
Have you tried making Canadian Butter Tarts before?
PIN Canadian Butter Tarts FOR LATER:
I came across Savoury Experiments recipe for Canadian Butter Tarts and thought I would try and make it myself! The only thing I really added which I think elevates an already perfect recipe is the crushed pecans and walnuts. I love adding a crunch to any recipe I have!
I am quite new to the world of using maple syrup as a sweetener but I’m loving it so far. I have been making maple syrup lattes which is the best! I have been enjoying the taste of maple syrup in my coffees everyday.
HERE is how to make Canadian Butter Tarts:
Watch it on YouTube and don’t forget to subscribe!
WHERE CAN I FIND THESE INGREDIENTS?
All of the ingredients are fairly simple to find. The only thing that would highly highly recommend is investing in higher quality syrup and butter. I have always gotten the cheaper syrups and this time I got a syrup that sort of is in between in pricing and it changed my view on maple syrup so much! I bought the President’s Choice store brand from The Real Canadian Superstore.
WHAT ARE THE INGREDIENTS?
- Pie Tarts/Shells
- High Quality Maple Syrup
- Unsalted Butter
- Eggs
- Brown Sugar
- Vanilla
- Salt
- Crushed Pecans and Walnuts
CAN I SUB ANYTHING OUT?
For this one, I highly recommend that you don’t! If you don’t like nuts then I would say to just omit it but other than that, any substitutions will change the recipe and will not have the same texture and flavor as a traditional Canadian Butter Tart. Something that is a little similar is Mini Pecan Pies which uses light corn syrup instead of maple syrup.
WHAT DOES IT TASTE LIKE?
This tastes like a maple sugar tart. It is extremely sweet so if you don’t like really sweet desserts, this might not be a recipe for you! I had a few then had to scoop out the filling a bit so it wouldn’t be super sweet. You can try and lessen the brown sugar but I’m not entirely sure it would do too much as maple syrup is sweet as is.
The flakiness of the tart is probably what I love about it the most. I use Pillsbury Pie Crusts often as they are so easy to use and keep in the freezer if need later! Earlier this month, I also shared an Apple Cream Cheese Hand Pie recipe that also uses pre-made pie crust!
Canadian Butter Tarts
Equipment
- Oven
Ingredients
- 1 Pack Pillsbury Pie Crust
- 1/4 Cup Unsalted butter Soften
- 1/2 Cup Brown Sugar
- 2 Eggs
- 1 Cup Maple Syrup
- 1/4 Tsp Salt
- 1 Tsp Vanilla Extract
- 1/2 Cup Crushed Pecans and Walnuts Mixed
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350 F degrees
- In a large bowl, cream together the butter and sugar then add the eggs one at a time.
- Once all combined, add in the maple syrup, salt, and vanilla extract. This will expand and get a little foamy.
- Prepare your pie crusts into greased muffin tins. Pour in batter 3/4 of the way and place in the oven.
- After 10 minutes, take out of the oven and sprinkle a bit of the walnuts and pecans.
- Place back in the oven for the remaining bake time.
- Let the tarts cool then enjoy and serve!
This recipe came at the most perfect time because my husband is now a Canadian Citizen too since the beginning of March and he loves maple syrup!
I hope you guys get to try this one day. Do you like maple syrup in general? Would you try to make Canadian Butter Tarts? I’d love to know in the comments below!
