An apple a day keeps the doctor away right? Does that still apply? It’s been a while since I’ve heard that phrase!
In pure honesty, I have to admit, apples are not in my top 5 favourite fruits. To me, they feel super basic and they have felt like that most of my life. It wasn’t until college where I really started having apples as a snack. My favourite way to eat apples is with a side of warm melted peanut butter!
After moving out with my then-boyfriend, now-husband, I started really cooking and experimenting with baking and fell in love with warm baked fruits!
Every time I make anything with cinnamon and nutmeg in it, it’s like a cozy warm Fall hug! I consider apples a Fall flavour and ingredient, do you?
PIN Baked Oat Apple Crisp FOR LATER:
You wouldn’t think that healthy and dessert would be in the same sentence but there are so many recipes out there making healthier swaps so that we could enjoy desserts without feeling the guilt!
Although this recipe does use butter and a bit of flour, it is overall a healthy and simple recipe and perfect to enjoy after dinner when you need to satisfy a sweet craving!
Aside from apples, you can also use other fruits like peaches, pears, nectarines, or even berries! Apple is just the ultimate and classic fruit to use in apple crisp. Just note that if you ever do want to use other fruits, you should increase the temperature of the oven and bake it for a little less as the fruits a softer than an apple. You’ll just want the top crunchy and hard.
What’s your favourite fruit to make a crisp or crumble dessert with? I’d love to know in the comments below!
HERE IS HOW TO MAKE BAKED OAT APPLE CRISP:
WHERE CAN I FIND THESE INGREDIENTS?
This recipe uses very very few ingredients and you most likely have them at home or at your local grocery store! The very first time I made something like this, it was because my husband and I went apple picking and I picked like 15 lbs of apples and needed to find creative ways to eat all of them! I highly highly suggest if you can, to pick apples locally! I love supporting local when I can and it’s such a fun Fall activity with family and/or friends!
WHAT ARE THE INGREDIENTS?
The ingredients to make this super yummy Baked Oat Apple Crisp:
Apple Mixture
- 6-7 Apples
- Cinnamon
- Nutmeg
- Brown Sugar
- Fresh Lemon Juice
Oat Crisp Topping
- Rolled Oats
- All-Purpose Flour
- Brown Sugar
- Vanilla Extract
- Unsalted Butter
WhAT TYPE OF APPLES SHOULD I USE?
So, I truly believe everyone has certain apples that they love and it can get into a debate trying to figure out which apple is THE BEST. My favourite apple is definitely red delicious while my parents love gala and my husband loves ambrosia so honestly use whatever apples you like best! The apples I used for these photos are ambrosia which worked really well!
WHAT IS THE TIME BREAKDOWN TO MAKE THIS RECIPE?
The time breakdown to make these Baked Oat Apple Crisp:
To Prepare – this includes the measuring of ingredients, cutting of the apples and scooping into the baking dish
Time: 15-20 Minutes
To Bake – this includes setting your baking dishes in the oven to cook
Time: 35-45 Minutes
To Cool – this includes removing the dishes from oven and letting it cool before eating
Time: 10-15 Minutes
WHAT EQUIPMENT DO I NEED?
In these photos, I made little single-serving apple crisps so I could freeze them and reheat them later. You’ll need 6-8 ramekins, or a pie dish or even a regular baking dish works fine. To cut the apples, you’ll need a cutting board and knife. To measure out all the remaining ingredients, you’ll need some measuring cups and spoons.
WHAT ARE THE STEPS TO PREPARE?
The steps to make this Baked Oat Apple Crisp recipe are:
- Measure – out all the ingredients to prepare to mix
- Prepare & Scoop – Mix the ingredients in two seperate bowls and scoop into baking dish
- Bake – in the oven for 35-45 minutes
- Cool and Serve -and enjoy!
CAN I SUB/ADD ANYTHING OUT?
Honestly, there aren’t that many ingredients to substitute or add in this Baked Oat Apple Crisp recipe. You can use different oats if you’d like and an alternative flour option like coconut flour or almond flour. If you want to make this vegan, you’ll need to use vegan butter instead of the regular butter.
As I said above, use your favourite kind of apples. In this recipe I used ambrosia but I have made this countless times with red delicious too.
If you have apple pie spice mix then you can use that instead of cinnamon and nutmeg. Apple pie spices are ground cinnamon, allspice, ginger, nutmeg and cardamom. I find that cinnamon and nutmeg are fine and don’t overpower the recipe!
WHAT DOES IT TASTE LIKE?
I can’t stress enough how delicious and cozy this apple crisp is! Especially when eaten warm and fresh with a scoop of vanilla ice cream and some whipped cream. The apples are warm, soft and seasoned well. The crisp topping is both soft and crunchy. Both together on a spoon makes the best bite!
HOW LONG DOES IT KEEP FOR?
If you’re keeping these Baked Oat Apple Crisp in the fridge, they are good for up to a week. If you’re storing these in the freezer, as long as they are wrapped tightly in plastic wrap or in an airtight container, they are good for up to 2 months. You’ll just need to rebake them for 20 minutes and broil the top for 3-5 minutes before taking them out.

- Whipped cream

INSPIRATIONS FOR THIS DISH?
What inspired me to make this baked oat apple crisp is the fact that I HATE wasting food and over-picked apples! A few years ago when I went apple picking, I picked so many apples so I made apple pie, apple cider, apple pork chops, and apple crisp! I needed to use all my apples before they would expire and rot.
I’ve been loving warm desserts with a scoop of ice cream lately! Something about warm baked or grilled fruit that feels super comforting and cozy!
HOW CAN I MEAL PREP THIS RECIPE?
I’m not entirely sure you’d want to meal prep this baked oat apple crisp as it is meant to be more of an after-dinner dessert BUT if you really want to, you’ll just need to thaw it out for a few hours and place it in a toaster oven for about 20 minutes and broil for 3-5 minutes to make the top crunchy again!
COST OF THIS BAKED OAT APPLE CRISP?
Based on my groceries in CAD, if you were buying EVERYTHING from scratch:
- 7 Apples – $7.22
- Flour (1kg) – $3.80
- Quick Cooking Rolled Oats (1000g) – $3.60
- Brown Sugar (1000g) -$3.25

- Nutmeg (125g) – $3.60
- Lemon Juice (1 lemon) – $0.98

This looks absolutely delicious!! I love apples but totally agree with you that they’re super basic. However they make a great snack and it’s great that they’re one of the more affordable fruits, especially when you need a large amount to cook with. I’m very tempted to try this (a version of, you know what I mean 😂)
They are totally basic!! haha Thanks for commenting, Sophie x
