Although winter is associated with so many fun holidays and activities, depending on where you live, they can be harsh!

PIN 8 Ways To Prepare Yourself For Winter FOR LATER:
Being properly alert and prepared in general is key to a lot of stress-free situations. During the winter, you could be caught in a storm or an even more intense snowstorm, so it’s extra important to be ready.
It is so helpful to have a checklist to keep track of what needs to be done before winter. I live off checklists and to-dos on a daily basis so having lists to pull out when the time comes is something I value!
Do you enjoy winter or are you a summer person? Let me know!
Here are 8 Ways To Prepare Yourself For Winter:
Have Alternative Heating Available
Being cozy and warm is something we look forward to after a long day. Wouldn’t it be so terrible if you’re heating at home wasn’t working in the evening?
Make sure that you have alternative heating available such as space heaters, hot fan/heaters, wood stove, gas heaters etc. I have a space heater that I love using in my home office for when my toes and legs are cold!
Take Out Blankets and Warm Clothes
We’ve got our piles of spring/summer clothes and our fall/winter clothes and we store one pile every time the new season comes!
It’s always a great idea to pull them out early so you’re not left searching your home for warmer clothing while you’re in a rush. I can’t count how many times I was unprepared outdoors during winter and the cold hurts!
Scatter Candles/Lighters & Flashlights/Batteries
If you can, start to gather up all your light sources in case there’s a storm. I recommend keeping a strong flashlight with fresh batteries in each of your rooms and hallways so that if the power turns off suddenly, you’re able to turn on a light source immediately!
I also love having candles around as it sets the mood! Be sure to be aware of where you put your candles and that you are within their vicinity.

Stock Up On Non-Perishables
Don’t overstock and be left with too much but it’s an awesome idea to keep some extra treats, water and canned items in the house that are set aside specifically for the winter season.
When there’s a storm, you could lose your electricity immediately and won’t know when it’ll come back on so having a bit of extra food/water is great preparation!
Prepare Wood For Fireplace
This applies to people who have a wood fireplace but if you do, ensure that you store your wood in a cool and dry place so that it’s easily accessible to you when needed!
When it’s super cold and wet in the winter, you’re unable to prepare wood fast enough to use and burn.
Propane & Burner
If you live in a place where the winters are super harsh and you know that you are most likely going to have a power outage, having a propane and portable burner like the ones we take camping is handy!
You could heat up some water and use it for coffee, tea, soup, noodles etc. It is gas so just beware of using it in an enclosed space. Best to use outdoors or in the garage when the door is slightly opened to the outside.
Purchase Ice Melt (Snow Salt)
This applies to both your home and business front! If you own your own business, depending on the local, you may be responsible for your property.
Ice melt lowers the freezing point of water to prevent the buildup of black ice and breaks the bond between pavement/concrete.
It’s always best to have this on hand to apply before an incoming snowstorm for the safety of your home, customers, clients and staff.

Great tips! I don’t do much in terms of preparing myself for winter, mostly my family covers it, but I can use this as a good excuse to buy a new cozy blanket. I don’t mind Winter and snow too much, but I hate driving in it. Thanks for the tips!
OH, so true! I hate driving in the snow! Thanks for reading, Alexis x
I switch out all of the bedding to the brushed cotton and fleece, it’s so much warmer. And then there’s the piles of blankets.
I try to just stay cosy inside, with lots of soups and stews (and a freezer full of them) and closing the outside out. It’s amazing what a difference closing the blinds and curtains makes.

Oh, fleece is the best! Thank you for commenting! xx

Wonderful list, Lynn! It’s super cold where I live and it’s important to be prepared at all times! I have several space heaters stored away and they’ve been so useful. I’ve also labeled containers that keep my winter stuff so it’s easier to find when I need it. I can’t believe we have to start preparing for the cold again, where did the time go! Thank you for sharing!
Totally! I hope the winter isnt too bad for you this year! Thanks for reading xx

i love a good snow, but in general winter is not my cup of tea. i hate the cold weather but as you say, it’s a time to cuddle up with more blankets, light a few candles & vibe out. i try to become as cozy as possible during the winter with a warm beverage. 🙂
Yes! Agreed. I can’t stand summer and generally do not thrive during these months haha Thanks for reading x
I’m looking forward to Autumn but also Winter in many similar ways (getting cosy, etc). I do get a bit frustrated after the snow has lingered for a while though, haha. It can be so bitterly cold that it’s not much fun, but that’s when we stock up and hunker down keeping warm indoors which isn’t too bad. Thanks for this!
Yes! I love being comfy at home! Thanks for reading, Molly! xx

Great tips! It’s super important to be prepared for winter, especially if a storm is on the way! Luckily, our winters here aren’t usually too harsh, but I definitely still prepare if there is inclement weather coming.
Same with where I live! Thanks for reading, Sarah xx
It’s not too early to start thinking about winter. Although for me it’s hard to imagine since it’s about 100 degrees Fahrenheit here these days. But I am looking forward to pulling out the blankets and warm pajamas and snuggling up on my couch with some warm cocoa. I don’t get snow where I live or too bad of weather during the winter usually (I’m in California) but I do stock up a little on food just in case. Great post!
Oh! California doesnt really have winter per say! Thats lovely if you love summer 🙂 Thanks for reading, Nicole xx
Excellent tips. Where we live, we are always preparing for winter, basically, as soon s winter ends we are already thinking about the next winter. This way we are as ready as possible in case the snows start early. Having lots of blankets and warm clothes is a must, you never know when you might need another layer or to curl up with a blanket if you lose power while the backup heat gets up and running. Salt is another big one, we ran out one year and it was too icy to go get more so it made for very slippery sidewalks and driveway. Now we always make sure to have plenty of salt to let that ice.
Right! The East coast must get super bad winters. Where I live it’s just really rainy most times but we get snow and icy in January/February! Thanks for reading, Sarah x
Some great tips here. Would just add that people who live in areas that get snow to make a note to book an appointment to get your Summer tires changed over to your Winter tires before the first snowfall and to get a few bottles of Winter Windshield Washer. Also, we live in the country so we have a generator should our power go out. We test the generator several times throughout the year to make sure it is in good running order. People should also have their gas fireplaces checked annually and be sure to change your furnace filters as per manufacturer’s instructions. Wouldn’t hurt to have an annual check-up on your furnace to make sure it is ready to work hard for you during the Winter.
Oh, that is so helpful to have a backup generator! We don’t have super bad winters but it’s different every year! Our power does go out sometimes but it doesn’t last too long! Thanks for reading 🙂
fantastic tips! I wouldn’t add anything else to this list
