Midcentury modern style is something I am so interested in since we bought our first house back in 2019. Just a little background, the original and former owner of the house left us her breakfast dining table. I thought it was the most beautiful thing! And then I researched more about it online and it was an original 1950’s Broyhill dining table with a serial number underneath the table! I know, I got goosebumps too and was literally surprised at how much it cost now! So that was the beginning of my love for Midcentury Modern!
Now, let me tell you more about what Midcentury Modern design is and I’ll be giving you some must-haves for this style if you want to incorporate it into your home.
First off, let’s start with a brief introduction of what midcentury modern is and what it’s known for.
What is midcentury?
It is a home design and style popularized from 1945 – 1968 when European designers and architects fled to the US after World War II. They brought with them the midcentury modern feel, style and vibe. Midcentury modern is a style that’s based on contemporary simplicity and connecting with nature.
The fundamental elements of a midcentury modern home:

- Distinctive features – Typical and special characteristics of pieces of furniture or décor is what gives an MCM vibe to a home. If you want to incorporate some midcentury modern furniture in your home, think of tapered legs. Furniture, or even décor pieces, with tapered legs is a distinctive characteristic of this style and definitely scream midcentury modern. There are plenty of furniture pieces and décor items you can find online with tapered legs.
- Simple and minimal decoration – Midcentury modern is based on modern simplicity but also comes with minimal style. It is what it’s best known for. Minimal decoration also enhances and emphasizes the look of an MCM room or space.
- Mix bright and neutral hues – Although Midcentury modern emphasizes simple and minimal decoration, a midcentury modern home also speaks a vast range of color, including colors from neutral, bright to bold colors. All of these colors are essential to this type of design and style. It is one of the key characteristics. Many homes designed with a midcentury modern vibe have bold colors of red, dark pink, blues and greens. If you are brave enough to add some colors to your wall, go with a statement bold color. Homes with authentic midcentury style have bold colors like purple or dark green. It does sound very scary, color-wise, when you think about it. But you can definitely play around on the more neutral side of color.
- Connecting with nature – This element is very important in a midcentury modern home. Midcentury modern designers and architects put an emphasis in blending homes into their natural surroundings. Connecting with nature is a key value in a midcentury modern home, so most homes with this style have more access points to the outdoors. If you don’t have access with the outdoor space such as a backyard or a small patio area, why not bring nature with you inside your home? Add in some greens in your living room, kitchen or even the dining room.

- Earthy tones – When bringing midcentury modern vibe into your home, play around with earthy tones like incorporating natural wood to some areas in your home. It could be a pantry closet where you can change up the white shelves into natural wood or a bare wall where you can put some wooden shelves on it. Some people even remodel their homes by adding wooden shiplap boards onto the walls. This really gives a great midcentury modern influence to the space.
Those are the fundamental elements and key factors of a midcentury modern home. If you’re thinking of redecorating your home and incorporating some midcentury modern vibe to the space, then you’re in for a treat! I’ve made a round up of some must haves you can decorate your home with in this type of style. These are neutral and minimal décor pieces ranging from high-end to affordable selections.
HERE IS 10 Neutral Midcentury Decor Must-Haves:
Linen draperies or curtains
When decorating a room or space with a midcentury modern style, linen is the way to go! You can easily do this by switch out your curtains with a linen type of fabric.
Botanical art prints
These are great to put in frames and style on an empty wall, on top of a dresser or even on a bookshelf. I love to collect these and you can also find them in antique stores for a very cheap price! I put them in a gold frame to give it a more vintage look.

Wooden lanterns or brass candle holders
Midcentury modern’s distinctive features are tapered legs, and this does not mean that you can only find this in furniture pieces. You can find them in décor pieces too! Just like this West Elm lantern! This will be very cute on a fireplace mantle or on a dining table.
Brass Arched Mirror
Brass is a type of metal that gives a vintage effect, hence, what midcentury modern is! Vintage and antique details display a midcentury element. This draws attention to yesteryears, especially with the arched detail.
Brass + Wood Wall hooks
Back in the days, they use brass metals and wood for hooks on the walls to hang stuff. Wood tones give such an earthy feel and that is one of the key factors of a midcentury modern home.
Wooden bowls or cutlery
I enjoy going to antique stores and find one of these beautifully crafted wooden bowls or cutleries because they give such a midcentury vibe to a décor space such as a bookshelf, a coffee table or a nightstand! It may sound weird but wooden cutlery is a cute décor piece to add.
Neutral Linen pillow
Throw pillows are the easiest décor pieces you can switch up every season or in this case, a change of heart in design and style. You can easily throw in some neutral linen throw pillows for a vintage 1940s look!
Brass Wall sconce
Wall sconces were popularized many years ago. They were known from the 1950s or even earlier than that. There are a lot of wall sconces now that have a modern feel but a décor must-have for a midcentury modern home is vintage brass.
Accent chair with tapered legs
One of the fundamental elements of a midcentury modern style home is by having furniture with tapered legs.
Vintage Rug
Midcentury modern is a vintage style so throwing in a nice vintage rug would really turn and change the vibe in the space.
